Back in action after the Super Bowl, here are the day’s top local news stories.
CVS Caremark, which is headquartered in Woonsocket, posted an 11% boost in fourth quarter profits and a 7% increase in revenue. No word yet on the role of a certain flagship store on Thayer St. in the recent good news for the company.
Today Providence lawyer and former state legislator, Thomas Pearlman, was sentenced to pay $1,500 in restitution and perform 10 hours of community service. Pearlman is apparently guilty of fee-gouging, “providing incompetent counsel,” and being a graduate of a certain Massachusetts university that shall remain unnamed.
Rhode Island state police are proceeding with a corruption investigation of Central Falls Mayor Charles Moreau. Moreau is accused of shady dealings, including installing a home furnace that was purchased by a campaign contributor. Suggested punishment for Mr. Moreau if found guilty: spending some time in an unheated Brown dorm.

Despite being incredibly cool, Ap
ple’s iPad is having trouble attracting consumers. That being said, the iPad could prove practical to students in one very important way- bringing textbooks and other class materials to your fingertips in a cool, easy manner. Major textbook publishers (McGraw-Hill, Kaplan, etc.) have already signed on to begin developing versions of their products for the iPad as well as looking for new ways to adapt textbooks to this new interface. One potential beneficial result of this might be a drop in the astronomical price of textbooks, although if we had to guess, the publishers will attempt to do anything in their power to stop that (insert evil laugh here). The most urban of Ivy League universities has been overrun with coyotes! Well, three coyotes were spotted on the Morningside Heights campus of Columbia University on Sunday morning. An NYPD officer confirmed the sighting.
Barnard’s Director of Public Safety, Dianna Pennetti, sent a campus-wide email requesting students to report further sightings. She wrote, “All members of the community are advised not to approach these animals” although coyotes typically don’t attack humans.
Though it seems surreal that there’s wildlife wandering around an urban jungle, coyotes have been known to adapt to urban environments. Coyotes survive in cities by foraging in garbage and going after rats or squirrels. New York has had its share of coyotes: one made its way to Central Park in 2006.
Until the coyotes are captured, it looks like Columbia students will have to watch out for wild animals in addition to urban crime.

Lunch: Ratty
Remember back in elementary school when every kid would look forward to that one special day per week designated as “pizza day”? Well, we have arrived at yet another of the Taste of the World section’s “Italian” weeks — admittedly a little repetitive by the time Saturday rolls around, but at least on Monday we can rest assured that we’re not just eating leftovers from the past few days (unless, of course, we’re merely consuming leftovers from the previous month, a possibility we’d prefer not to consider).
Dinner: Ratty
Belgian carrots, Moroccan beans, French onion soup, locally baked bread . . . no wonder Brown is known for its geographic diversity.
