Update: Community informed of the death of Avi Schaefer ’13

UPDATE: The driver of the car that struck and killed Avi Schaefer ’13 Friday morning was charged with drunk driving, according to vice president for public affairs and University relations Marisa Quinn. Read browndailyherald.com for more. The original post is below.

Avi Schaefer ’13 was struck by a car on Thayer St. this morning, dying from injuries sustained in the accident, President Ruth Simmons wrote in an e-mail to the Brown community just before noon on Friday.

“By all early signs, he was a student who was going to make the most of his time at Brown and his mark on the world after Brown,” she wrote.

Simmons’ message included details on grief support and Schaefer’s time at Brown. Below, the full text of her e-mail. [Read more →]

What to do tonight: 2/12

It’s that wonderful time of year when program houses of all shapes and sizes are looking for new recruits. If you’re interested in joining one, it’s a great opportunity to get to know the people you might be living with next year. It’s also a great opportunity to eat lots of free food. I’ve never tried, but I think you could probably survive the month of February by only eating the tasty treats the houses are all but throwing your way. If you’re looking to start off your night right, there are a couple of great options:

High Tea
4:00-6:00 P.M.
ADPhi, Goddard House
Cake or death? You can find the former, with lots of delicious tea at ADPhi tonight!

Pain et Fromage
5:00-7:00 P.M.
Machado House, 87 Prospect Street
Bread and cheese, for all you non-Frenchies. No one does pain et fromage quite like Machado House. Except for actual French people.

If you’re looking for a few non-food centered activities, there are a few excellent options on that front as well:

Dancing with the Professors 2010
7:30 P.M.
Alumnae Hall
$7 for students
If you’ve ever seen Dancing with the Stars, the show that takes B-list celebrities and teaches them to dance, you know what this is about. The Brown Ballroom team has taken a few of our beloved professors and whipped them into waltz-ready shape. Tonight’s competition is not to be missed!

“Wait Until Dark”
8:00 P.M.
Production Workshop, 7 Young Orchard
“Wait Until Dark” was a 1966 play by Frederick Knott that was also made into a fantastic movie starring Audrey Hepburn as a blind woman holding her own against some pretty gruesome mobsters who think she’s got their drugs and want them back. Leah Cogen ’13 takes on the role in PW’s latest show and word on the street is that it’s going to be a thrilling night. Read the full review in today’s Herald!

Brown is the new black: Bohemian Rhapsody

Welcome to the latest installment of Brown is the new black, dedicated to spotlighting the most fashion-forward Brunonians we can find. This week Boho-chic!

Bohemian Rhapsody

Effortlessly put together, organized chaos – whatever you want to call it. This season wasn’t spared of those who are fashionable without either meaning to or wanting. They looked relaxed, but with an edge, scruffy but cool – they have it nailed down. Erin Claire ’12 is one of those people. She wears high-waist shorts and a thick shirt to go with them. She pairs ripped, patterned, taupe tights, a staple of hers with caramel ankle booties (boyish looking), and a brown sweatshirt over a grey one. To escape the cold, she wears knitted mittens that match perfectly with her hat, a knitted beret, and a thick beige scarf, as the perfect neck accessory. Each item on its own may not seem like much of a fashion piece, but the overall outfit, the mixing and matching, is genius.

Breaking News: Kennedy out of House race

The Providence Journal is reporting late Thursday night that Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., will not be running for re-election in November. After eight terms in Congress, the last Kennedy in Congress has decided to step aside, he announced in a video. More to come in next week’s Herald about the race.

Unconfirmed: Wale to play spring weekend!?

So it’s looking like DC native, Seinfeld enthusiast and critically and commercially acclaimed rapper Wale may very well be headlining Spring weekend’s Saturday show. While it’s important to note that neither BCA nor Wale’s people have confirmed, the choice would make a whole lot of sense: the up-and-coming rapper’s smart-guy swagger is already popular among students and certainly fits the Brown aesthetic (he even name-drops North Face in one of his songs!). Anyway, we here at BlogDailyHerald are happily entertaining the idea of Wale as a headliner — his show is famously high-energy and apparently includes both a full backing band (even a horn section!) and a sample of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

We’ll keep you posted as we get more info, but in the meantime, get ‘em all, get ‘em all, pack it all up, stack up your friends like a million bucks.
