BREAKING: Simmons will not continue on Goldman Sachs board

President Ruth Simmons has decided not to continue in her position on the Board of Directors of Goldman Sachs, the firm announced Friday. Her decision is the result of “increasing time requirements associated with her position as President,” according to the statement.

Simmons joined the board in 2000, when she was president of Smith College. Simmons told The Herald that, while she can “fully accept” scrutiny of the company, she cannot determine policy as a single board member.

“You’re not in charge of everything that your friends do and every policy that organizations that you’re affiliated with issue,” she said.

Simmons said she did not expect bad publicity directed at the firm to reach Brown.

What to do tonight: 2/13

Poler Bears Valentine’s Day Workshop
2:00 P.M., Art House Lounge, Harkness, $2

All of your wildest dreams are about to come true: Brown’s own Poler Bears, everyone’s favorite pole dancers, are leading a workshop so that you, too, can learn the subtle art of sophisticated seduction this weekend.

Spring Arias and Duets Concert
8:00 P.M., Grant Recital Hall

If you want your significant other to think you’re classy and cultured, take them to this concert sponsored by Brown Opera Productions. If you’re on your own this weekend (happy Anna Howard Shaw Day, Liz Lemon!) go hear some beautiful music about how much love makes you want to kill yourself. No one does bitter quite like Rossini, Verdi, and Mozart.

Brown Stand-Up Comics Present: The Valentines Show

8:00 P.M., List 120, $1

Sorry to beat you over the head with Valentine’s themed events, but at least there will most likely be some quips on love at this show (because, let’s face it, Valentines are overrated and you never really wanted one anyway).

Sweat it Out

10:00 P.M. – 2:00 A.M., Harambee House lounge
$3 (but first 25 people get in free!)

Since this party is predicted to be packed, ticket inflation starts at 11:00 P.M., but you can rest assured that a portion of the proceeds will go to earthquake relief in Haiti.
