The same ten questions we always ask: Norman Boucher, Brown Alumni Magazine

Name: Norman Boucher

Age: Mentally or physically? They’re really, really out of synch.

Occupation: Editor and Publisher, Brown Alumni Magazine

What’s your job description, in one sentence? To fund and edit a magazine that’s so good alums actually spend time reading it.

What’s the best part of your job? Having the BDH think I matter enough that anyone cares how I answer these questions.

The worst? Usually being the dumbest person in the room. In fact, like most journalists I originally chose my profession so I wouldn’t look so bad asking the stupid, nosy questions that come naturally to me.

After the jump: Boucher’s ringtone, his lunch and his opinion of Brown students. [Read more →]

Spotted on Thayer: ProHo

Howdy, partner.

Clippity-cloppity sounds on Thayer this morning brought to mind the days of Liquid patrons calling hansom cabs for the ride home and rides tied up outside Tedeschi. (Oh wait, it would have been called Store 24 back then.) But it turns out it was just a mounted Providence Police officer, pictured outside the bookstore.

So watch where you step this afternoon. The real question: when can we expect equine SafeRide?

Cup o’ (Pro)Jo

“Body of Evidence,” a TV pilot about a feisty medical examiner, is set to start shooting in Rhode Island in March.  The ABC Studios project joins a list of recent TV pilots shot in RI, including ABC’s “House Rules” and CBS’ “Empire State.”  But we’re still holding out for a flashy CW teen drama–maybe something along the lines of 02912.

A group of Providence high school students gathered in front of the Rhode Island Department of Education yesterday to voice their support for Central Falls Supt. Frances Gallo’s plan to fire all Central Falls high school teachers.  The students, who belong to a group called Young Voices, held a press conference to advocate for the reform and express their frustration with the current education system.

Newport is a contender to host the America’s Cup, a premier sailing competition,  in 2013.  The race, which was last held in Valencia, Spain, could bring jobs and dollars to a battered Rhode Island economy.  As for predictions on a Newport race, it all comes down to a home turf advantage, making the Brown sailing team our bet for the big win.

Attention: lovers of water and/or fire

WaterFire — the living, burning, seasonal art installation created by Barnaby Evans ’75 — is looking for volunteers for the 2010 season.

Volunteers, as many of 150 of which are needed for each night, wear all black “so they can disappear into the night like magicians,” according to a WaterFire press release.

The release encourages people of all abilities to volunteer, for such exciting tasks as piloting boats, tending the fires, selling merchandise and . . . cleaning up afterward. Hey, somebody’s gotta do it.

Ratty vs. V-Dub 2/18

Lunch: Ratty. Both eateries have those weirdly delicious Pumpkin & White Chocolate Chip cookies, but only the Ratty has eggplant parm.

Dinner: Ratty. Hopefully you ate enough eggplant parm at lunch to never have to eat again, but if you must, head back to the Ratty. There are only 4 nights of Vegetarian Sandwich Bar left.

WTF is happening on the Main Green? Blood edition

At about 2:00 this afternoon a group of students wearing anything from red and pink pool tubes to red boots to just red cloth draped over them congregated in Faunce Arch and slowly made their way to the Main Green, dancing, swaying their arms, and screaming every so often. A massive tour group as well as some other Brown students stopped to watch. Many pulled out their camera phones. This continued for about 10 minutes at which time they sort of just dispersed. I think they were supposed to represent blood flowing through the body or something…not quite sure.

— Gili Kliger

Update: This facebook message provides a partial, cryptic explanation:

“1:45 faunce, a celebration of the sanguine, a bloody battle of passion, a passing time you will never forget.

yours in blood,
brown university movement experiments”
