Demonstrators converged on the State House Monday, the day before a vote on a bill seeking to reduce Rhode Island’s $220 million deficit. State employees were incensed by pension cuts and Tea Party protesters sought further spending reduction. The commotion even extended to House Speaker Gordon Fox, who got into an argument with another lawmaker over charges of lobbyist influence.

Two Providence College basketball players were held on bail for randomly choosing a PC student and attacking him Monday morning. According to the police report, the players decided “they were going to beat up the next male they saw.” PC has already suspended the two players.

Some state transportation projects will have to be delayed because the full amount of federal money that Rhode Island expected has not yet arrived, leaving the state with a transportation budget that is $80 million smaller than it was last year.
