Spring Weekend Artist Profile: Rebirth Brass Band

At first, Rebirth Brass Band, a self-described funk jazz band from New Orleans, might seem like a strange addition to the already eclectic Spring Weekend lineup.  A quick listen to some of their music, however, will leave you with an immediate appreciation for what they will be adding to Saturday’s show (also referred to as “Drunken Revelry, part two”).  While Rebirth certainly has a different sort of flair than Diddy-Dirty Money (hint: the band only tweets a couple of times a day), it’s sure to dazzle even the most pop-obsessed Brunonians.

Since 1984, the band has been recording soulful-but-not-too-heady jazz music that tickles the ears and transports listeners to the streets of New Orleans during Mardis Gras.  Some of their more popular tracks include “Do Whatcha Wanna,” an upbeat, not-quite-traditionalist medley of sick brass melodies interspersed with occasional lyrics and “Feel like Funkin’ it Up,” a fast-paced, technically impressive bucket of fun.  The name of their newest album, Rebirth of New Orleans (released today!), is quite fitting.

Note to the skeptic: Rebirth is not your average Spring Weekend band.  Their music is not the pop or rock that you might be used to.  But if you let them, Rebirth Brass Band will show you a great time on Saturday.  Listen to some more of their tracks after the jump.
