Chow Down Brown: Food Week 2011

This cheeseburger won't be making an appearance (or will it?), but if it did, it'd definitely be ready to party.

There’s Sex Week, and there’s Spring Week, but as all these themed weeks draw to an inevitable and regrettable close, we need a new something to set our sights on. In hopes of filling this void, the Brown Epicurean Society introduces Brown’s first annual Food Week, which kicks off tomorrow and promises six full days of edible adventures. A wide array of events should feature something for everyone. Read more after the jump or check out BES’ website for more info.

Have you always watched Iron Chef and daydreamed about one day participating? Here’s your chance: on Monday, venture over to Andrews Dining Hall from 4:00-7:00pm for the Brown Iron Chef competition. Secret ingredients will be on hand as students compete to concoct the best creation. Come on over and see how you measure up–a miscellany of real live judges will be dutifully assessing. Email if you want to sign up as an individual or a team.

If you are or ever have been interested in dipping your toes in the restaurant industry, attend “A Career in Restaurant Management: Behind the Scenes” this Tuesday, from 4:00-5:30pm in Salomon 001. The HR manager from Hillstone Restaurant Group will speak about career opportunities in restaurant management. If you count yourself among the many of us who have yet to square away summer plans, there’s an added bonus: information about Hillstone’s full-time and paid Management Internship Program. Get it.

Wednesday‘s forecast promises “mostly clouds” and not-absolutely-freezing weather, which obviously translates to “excusable conditions for lazing around outside.” BES’ Gourmet Market is here to help, taking place by the Faunce steps on Wriston from 12:00-3:00pm (rain location is the Faunce Multipurpose Room). A handful of local vendors will be around purveying the deliciousest of snacks for your outdoor romps. Bring cash and stock up on treats from Besto Pesto, Duck and Bunny, Narragansett Creamery, Providence Granola Project, Seven Stars, and Virginia & Spanish Peanut Company.

Thursday features “An Evening of Food Porn,” co-sponsored by SHEEC, from 8:00pm-1:00am in Smitty-B. Food and sex are a fabled combination, and this event will play around with the theme with a bunch of different activities taking place over the course of the evening. Come talk about two of the best subjects in the world–there might even be chocolate. RSVP by emailing; spots are limited.

On Friday night, join in on a secular Easter Evening, sponsored by the Late Night Fund. It’s going down in the Granoff Center from 10:00pm-12:00am. Make sure you bring an appetite (so you can avail yourself of the fancy desserts and chocolate egg hunts) and a creative streak (for egg painting, when you can create your very own Fabergé egg).

Johnson & Wales is one of our more elusive college neighbors, but one thing it does have is a kickass culinary program and a museum to match. BES is orchestrating a field trip down the hill to the JWU Culinary Museum from 12:45-3:45pm next Saturday. Bring $4 and your student ID for museum admission.
