For those of us who remember the Internet before YouTube (do you remember, freshmen?), eBaum’s World was the entertainment staple of the World Wide Web. Before “Charlie Bit My Finger,” this site provided annoyingly catchy Flash animations and a host of other videos that now make us question our former preteen senses of humor.
The eBaum’s World of today appears to be but a shell of its former glory. Eric Bauman, or eBaum himself, sold the site in 2008 after numerous accusations of stealing content from other sources. But while the site’s popularity seems to have been usurped for the most part by YouTube, its old gems are still floating around the Internet.
The banana from “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” is literally iconic as it is still featured in the eBaum’s World hyperlink bar. But the video itself can only provide feelings of ambivalence. Is it funny? Irritating? Is the banana oddly phallic? In what kind of situation would one have both peanut butter and jelly and a baseball bat? The only thing we can be certain of by the end of the minute and 46 seconds is that no one loves peanut butter and jelly as much as this banana.
How is this nearly three minutes long? We wonder if there is some subliminal messaging in “Badger Badger Badger” because You only need to watch the first 30 seconds to get the gist of the video. There are some badgers, some mushrooms, and a snake that is presumably far away in the desert. A Harry Potter version of this video exists as well.
Why watch Kill Bill when you could watch “Xiao Xiao #3”? Although there are several videos of stick figures fighting, we like this one the best. Watch the underdog triumph as he overtakes the metaphorical “Boss” with a Trinity from The Matrix-style kick. It is uncertain if there are any life lessons to be learned from these videos; all we know is that these stick figures sure are violent.
We were 12 or younger when “All your base are belong to us” was at its prime as an Internet meme, so many of us may have missed the joke here. As weird as the video itself may seem, the photoshopped images are kind of cool.
“End of the World” is probably the most famous flash animation video on eBaum’s World—it was also posted on Albino Blacksheep, a similar flash video site. It’s been about 10 years since this short was originally posted, but lines like “But I am le tired” have maintained the video’s status as a classic.
