Waffles, parfait, and oatmeal, oh my!

Everyone knows about the Blue Room’s Shanghai and Kabob & Curry specials, but many — including dedicated morning patrons — seem to be unaware of the breakfast specials that greet students starting off their (hopefully) productive days.

Every time I come to indulge, other students curiously look at what I have and ask about it, reacting with a mixture of surprise and excitement — kind of like their reactions to discovering Jo’s serves stuffed french toast and grilled cheese when I’ve gone to get those.

"Parfait" — it's the French word for "perfect."

So here’s a quick and dirty summary:

  • The specials are: parfait, oatmeal, and waffles.
  • Each runs for a week (Mon-Fri), and they rotate in that order. This week is parfait and next will be oatmeal.
  • Each special is made to order, with a variety of toppings you can choose.
  • There are no long lines or rowdy crowds, at least for now.

“The breakfast specials are one of the things that make the Blue Room, well, special,” Aaron Fitzenry, retail culinary guru, wrote in an email to BlogDH.

When I ordered chocolate chips as one of my toppings, I didn't quite realize it would turn my oatmeal into chocolate-town. But it's chocolate, who can complain?

The specials are only planned for weekdays, but “sometimes, however, we’ll spontaneously run one of the breakfast specials on a weekend (depends on staffing and product availability),” he wrote.

He also told us what we can expect to see in the future. “Looking to next semester, the specials will be much the same with some small seasonal changes — look for things like fresh berries in spring,” he wrote.

If you ever forget what the week's breakfast special is, you can always check the sign greeting you at the entrance.

Chef Aaron is always looking for ideas. Send him “a few suggestions and you might see something special around finals,” he wrote.

So what he’s saying is: let me know what you want and I’ll see if it can happen. Take him up on that.
