Paxson packs Sayles
Beneath portraits of presidents past, President-elect Christina Paxson addressed a packed Sayles Hall this afternoon, promising to uphold “Brown’s dedication to maintaining a terrific undergraduate program… while focusing on the creation of new knowledge.”
Paxson also spoke about her brother, who graduated from Brown in 1975. When he first left Pittsburgh for College Hill, he was a “clean-cut studious kid,” she said. He then returned to their home for Thanksgiving vacation with long hair, new music and radical ideas “about the ethics of eating meat.”
“This is anything but a complacent campus, and that’s a very good thing,” she said.
Paxson acknowledged the huge responsibility of the job, and told the audience she was aware of the “great trust” she’d been given. She also touched on the need to continue a “positive” relationship with the city of Providence and state of Rhode Island.
