What to do this week: November 19–November 22


We feature a bunch of events in our “A cool thing you shouldn’t miss” series. We’re aware of that there are always cool things taking place on campus that you  probably shouldn’t miss, and we often don’t get to cover them all. Enter “What to do this week,” a new weekly series that will feature some of the notable events happening at Brown and RISD each week. Tuesday, November 19:

Event: 20th Anniversary of the Oslo Peace Accord: What Went Wrong and What are the Prospects for Peace between Israelis and Palestinians?
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Salomon 001

Gershon Baskin of the Israel-Palestine Center for Research and Information (IPCRI) will speak about aspects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Baskin has previously advised Israeli Prime Ministers on the Peace Process and holds a Ph.D. in International Affairs from the University of Greenwich.

Wednesday, November 20:

Event: IFF Presents Inside Llewyn Davis
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Providence Place Mall, Theater 8

Ivy Film Festival will hosting an advanced screening of the Coen Brothers’ film Inside Llewyn Davis. Get to PPM early to get a seat.

Event: Roger Thomas, Design Alchemist
7:00 p.m.
Location: RISD Auditorium (17 Canal Walk)

Roger Thomas, the Executive Vice President of Design at the Wynn Corporation Las Vegas, will be speaking at RISD on Wednesday. Thomas is a stand-out in the design world—he was even named “Designer of the Year” in 2008.

Thursday, November 21

Event: A Conversation: Brown, Protest, and Free Speech — with the Janus Forum and the Organizers of the Demonstration against Ray Kelly 
4:00 p.m.
Location: List 120

In light of the continuing conversation about the events surrounding the Ray Kelly protests, Janus Forum and the organizers of the protests are teaming up to “discuss the role of protest and its effects, whether good or bad, on free speech at Brown.”

Event: “Talking to Robots” with Stefanie Tellex, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Brown University
 7:00–8:30 p.m.
Location: English Cellar Alehouse (165 Angell, between Thayer and Brown)

This presentation by Professor Tellex will be hosted by Science Underground—a Providence-based “science cafe” for those who want to talk and learn about science with notable academics in a non-academic setting. Prof. Tellex’s research project “aims to construct robots that use language to seamlessly meet people’s needs.” Robots though.

Event: Social Justice Mixer
Time: 7:30–9:00 p.m.
Location: Alumnae Hall, Crystal Room

Go to this mixer for to learn more about some of the several social justice groups on campus. There will be lots of food, shmoozing, and…well, social justice.

Friday, November 22

Event: You Hungry? Come enjoy Challah while watching “A Place at the Table”
Time: 7:30–9:30 p.m.
Location: Smitty B 206

The Sustainable Food Initiative and Challah for Hunger just get it: Challah and a movie is the only way to start your weekend.
