As the semester progresses at the speed of light, the senior class is beginning to make peace with that fateful day in May: Commencement. Until the class of 2014 leaves us, BlogDH wants to highlight all the interesting things they’ve been up to. To this end, we’re (re)starting the series Last Call, which features seniors reflecting on their experiences at Brown. Each featured senior will tag another senior for the next installment. Find this year’s other “Last Call” chains here.
People might know me as… a rugby player, coffee lover, giggler, and Classics and Art History concentrator with an affinity for Seneca and Klimt.
In my time at Brown, I am most proud of… leading the women’s rugby team to obtaining varsity status.
On a Friday night, you might find yourself… To be honest, I spent many Friday nights binge-watching The West Wing instead of writing my thesis #noshame.
The best class/professor at Brown is… An incredibly tough question. Rebecca Molholt is the best lecturer. Lisa Mignone is the best unofficial advisor and Joe Pucci the best official advisor (both Classics gods). Shiva Balaghi is a rock star of contemporary art of the Middle East and the best tweeter. Dietrich Neumann is the most charming and could make anyone fall in love with contemporary architecture.
Three things you wish you knew freshman year… 1. You don’t have to do anything that doesn’t bring you joy. 2. SafeRide is actually a life saver. Learn how to work the system and you can get (almost) anywhere. 3. If you put soup in a fountain drink cup at the Gate (RIP), it only costs $1.95 instead of $3.95 (and you get twice as much).
Ratty vs. V-Dub? I suppose I tend to frequent the Ratty more since I’ve always lived in south campus, but I’m always down for CFF or waffles at the V-dub.
The best random thing you did in your time at Brown is… Freshman year, my rugby team entered the low-division intramural ice hockey team (“Brown Women’s Rugby Intramural Hockey Football Club”). I only played one game as goalie, during which I had to hold onto the goal to stand up. But we somehow tied before losing in a shoot-out.
One thing you wish you had done… I really wish I had joined a dance group at Brown. I started dancing when I was 3 and continued throughout high school, but it was challenging to find time while playing rugby.
After graduation, you plan to… This summer I’m going to intern at the Leila Heller Gallery in NYC before beginning an MA program in History of Art at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London in the fall.
What’s the hardest class you’ve taken at Brown? If you could do it over, would you still take it?
Definitely Imperial Latin Survey. It’s a requirement for Classics concentrators… I swear, it’s the Orgo of the humanities.
What’s been the most rewarding extracurricular that you’ve been a part of during your four years? Why?
Absolutely rugby. I could write a book about my experience on the team, but playing rugby has truly defined my time at Brown. I know that sounds cliché, but some of my fondest memories at Brown revolve around team, particularly our recent elevation from a club to varsity program. The team has been my second family and support system, and I don’t know what I would ever do without them.
Sum up your history thesis in one sentence, lolmythesis style.
The Romans built an altar. It sank but Mussolini (kinda) found it. Cool.
One piece of advice for underclassmen?
Never be afraid to ask for help.
