A Cool Thing You Shouldn’t Miss: Brown Concert Agency Speakeasy

Student bands Butter, Sad Family, and richard will perform in tonight’s speakeasy, presented by the Brown Concert Agency (BCA). The show promises to be an excellent showcase of some of the incredible musical talent at Brown.

Butter features Peter Enriquez ’16, Marion Wellington ’16, Peter Frisch ’18, Kenny Volkmann ’16, and Alex Han ’17. The newly-formed quintet incorporates jazz influences into its own brand of funk/R&B; their sound is the culmination of musical passions that lie outside the lines of traditional genres. Riding the wave of their first single (which was released just last month), Butter has a lot of fresh, exciting tunes to share tonight. Expect some “joyful, saucy, funky music” during their set. For a preview of what’s to come, check out their Soundcloud profile and Facebook page.

Sad Family is a project created by Sophie Kasakove ’17, Patrick McMenamin ’17, Bailey Barton ’17, and Matt Marsico ’15. The band specializes in “sad wedding music that already predicts divorce, played while on speed” (in other words, “grungey spacey twee-pop”). This sonically-eccentric undertaking is pretty new–the band started rehearsing for the first time this semester and the speakeasy will be their third performance. Although their social media presence is yet to be established, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for future shows and releases!

richard (lack of capitalization intended) is the largest ensemble of the night; band members include Wes Sanders ’15, Chloe Kibble ’17, Ana Gonzalez ’15, Arun Janssens ’15, Grant Meyer ’16, Peter Enriquez ’16, Sage deLisser ’15, Sumner Becker ’14, and Johnny Page ’17. The band’s orchestration, which includes turntables and euphonium, is almost as unique as its sound. The group’s “[grounding] in rawness” resonates in their compositions, covers and performances, creating a strain of dynamically funky acoustic-electronic hip-hop that thrives in live performance. For more information, check them out on Facebook.

Overall, tonight’s speakeasy is going to be quite a show. Take a break from social exile the actual worst thing ever studying for finals and stop by the McCormack Auditorium (across from JWW) from 7:15 to 10:30p.m. to check out this awesome lineup of student bands!
