Last Call: Layla Heidari

As the semester progresses at the speed of light, the senior class is beginning to make peace with that fateful day in May: Commencement. Until the class of 2015 leaves us, BlogDH wants to highlight all the interesting things they’ve been up to. To this end, we’re (re)starting the series Last Call, which features seniors reflecting on their experiences at Brown. Each featured senior will tag another senior for the next installment. Find this year’s other “Last Call” chain here and our RISD “Last Call” chain here.

Then + Now

Then + Now

People might know me as… the girl who always wears black .

In my time at Brown, I am most proud of… Being asked to guest lecture in Stephen Kinzer’s class on Iran about my thesis research and the Tehran art scene.

On a Friday night, you might find yourself… Watching Gilmore Girls (no shame) until I am called into action by someone who wants to go out, or convince someone that going out is a good idea.

The best class/professor at Brown is… War, Revolution and Art with Shiva Balaghi. It was just perfectly up my alley and we had lots of “personalities” in that class.

Three things you wish you knew freshman year…
1) There is actually a LOT of amazing food in RI.
2) To buy actual snow boots instead of destroying all my shoes (too late now).
3) Even with an open curriculum, it is really easy to fall into taking the same types of classes all the time (even within a concentration). I sometimes feel that I limited myself; not that the classes I took didn’t interest me, but more so that I didn’t  venture out of my comfort zone enough.

Ratty vs. V-Dub?… Whichever was closest.

The best random thing you did in your time at Brown is… Help out some high school friends with a music curating website and plan their NYC launch party.

One thing you wish you had done… One of the various campus challenges, but there is still time for that!

After graduation, you plan to… Move back to NYC and work for DigitasLBi.

What’s been the most rewarding extracurricular that you’ve been a part of during your four years? Why?  IMPULSE Dance Company, 100%. (They would also have my head if I said otherwise). [It] is my family and biggest support system here at Brown. It is such a special group of incredibly hilarious, talented, grounded, and compassionate people. We are always goofing off and laughing so it’s pretty miraculous when we finally get our shit together for the show!

If you missed the show this year because tickets sold out, we told you so! Get them early next year. If you came to the show-thank you for all the overwhelming support!

Nothing will ever beat the thrill I get when I am on stage with these guys. Love you, fam.

Sum up your thesis in one sentence, lolmythesis style. No one puts Iranian artists in a corner.

One piece of advice for underclassmen? Don’t be that person who accidentally replies all to list serve emails. Double, triple, quadruple check.

Danny‘s question: What is the least eco-friendly thing you’ve ever done? Definitely getting all the Impulse publicity material printed this year: multiple rounds of posters (thats 70 posters/round), tickets, show programs (600+ individual booklets)… Metcalf  1 — Planet Earth  0

Who are you tagging next? Victor Ha

Question for Victor: Was your training as a boy scout useful to you at all in your time at Brown?
