(Pre-Frosh) What to do this week: ADOCH 2015

Admitted students from the Class of 2019 will descend on College Hill this week, from Tuesday, April 21 to Thursday, April 23 for ADOCH 2015. If you are one of them, here’s what you should do this week:

3Tuesday, April 21

Event: Brown Welcomes the Class of 2019
Time: 7:00 p.m. – 7:45 p.m.
Location: Main Green Tent

President Christina Paxson and Dean of Admission James Miller ’73 welcome members of the Class of 2019 to College Hill.

Event: Speed Friending
Time: 11:00 p.m. – 12:30 a.m.
Location: Alumnae Hall

Like speed dating, but platonic (?). Meet other students visiting for ADOCH and current Brown students.

Event: Arch Sings
Time: 11:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.
Location: Wayland Arch and Morris-Champlin Arch

#socollege. Enjoy performances by Brown’s a cappella groups. The IGCAC (Intergalactic Community of A Cappella) performs in group Arch Sings during fall orientation and ADOCH in the spring.

Wednesday, April 22

Event: In Pursuit of the Humanities
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 9:50 a.m.
Location: Sayles Hall

Michael Steinberg, Vice Provost for the Arts and Director of the Cogut Center for the Humanities, will discuss with a panel of current students the humanistic areas of study at Brown.

Event: The Inside Scoop on Brown
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 10:50 a.m.
Location: Sayles Hall

Talk to a student panel, moderated by Associate Director of Admission Elisha Anderson ’98, about social and academic life at Brown.

Event: The Roots of Hip Hop
Time: 11:00 a.m. – 11:50 a.m.
Location: Alumnae Hall

Dr. Tricia Rose, Professor of Africana Studies and Director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, will give a lecture on the cultural, creative, urban, social, and technical roots of hip hop culture.

Event: Academic Concentration Fair
Time: 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Location: Main Green Tent

Talk to professors, department representatives, and undergraduate concentrators about Brown’s 70+ concentrations.

Event: The Magical Brain: From Neurons to Consciousness
Time: 1:00 p.m. – 1:50 p.m.
Location: Alumnae Hall

Professor Michael Paradiso, who teaches NEUR10: The Brain: An Introduction to Neuroscience, will lecture about the processes behind visual perception and conscious awareness.

Event: STEM Day
Time: 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Location: Salomon Center, various locations

Learn about STEM programs at Brown in panels, talks, and breakout sessions with departments including Applied Math, Chemistry, CS, Engineering, Geology, Math, Physics, and Statistics.

Event: Dinner and Activities Fair
Time: 5:30 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.
Location: Sayles Hall to Ittleson Quad

Parade with the always-killing-it Brown Band in a “March of the Bears” over to the athletic complex for dinner and the activities fair. Explore Brown’s 200+ student extracurricular groups, clubs, and teams.

Event: Brown’s Got Talent
Time: 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Location: Salomon 101

Watch student performances from Brown’s cultural, dance, musical, and improv groups.

Event: Ivy Film Festival Screening
Time: 10:00 p.m. – 12:30 a.m.
Location: Smith-Buonanno Hall 106

Enjoy screenings with Ivy Film Festival, a student group that organizes the annual Ivy Film Festival, one of the largest student-run film festivals in the world. IFF 2015, earlier this month, boasted advanced screenings of Trainwreck, The End of the Tour, Slow West, and a Skype interview with Jason Schwartzman.

Event: Brown Storytellers
Time: 10:45 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.
Location: Memorial Room, Stephen Robert ’62 Campus Center

Listen to true, personal stories from the Brown Storytellers, in a style similar to The Moth and This American Life.

Thursday, April 23

Event: Health, Mental Health & Well-Being at Brown
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Location: Rhode Island Hall, 108

Current students and support staff will discuss how to lead a mentally and physically healthy life at Brown, talking about resources available to help students manage stress and well-being.

Event: Farewell, Friends!
Time: 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Location: Main Green Tent

Listen to closing remarks by Professor Kenneth Miller ’70 (he probably wrote your high school Biology textbook) to mark the end of ADOCH 2015.
