Blog on Pubs: Clerestory

by Cayman Robson

Occasionally, BlogDH will reach out to other Brown publications and ask them to publish a short preview of their upcoming issues as a means of showcasing their awesomeness.  Here we have a sampling from this semester’s issue of Clerestory Journal of the Arts.  The journal is having a release party tonight from 8-10pm in Machado Lounge (87 Prospect), so head over to grab a journal, listen to some music, watch some videos and hang out with some of the featured artists.

From Emma Janaskie ’13, one of the editors:

Here are the basics: Clerestory Journal of the Arts is College Hill’s oldest arts publication. We publish Brown and RISD undergraduate student work in poetry, prose, visual art, video art and music semesterly and are always looking for ways to push the envelope both in terms of what and how we can feature student work and cultivate an arts community for Brown and RISD undergrads.  The aim of Clerestory isn’t just to put out a publication every semester: we want to get students talking about what they like, why they like it and what and how they want to see their work and their peers’ work presented to the larger College Hill artistic community. The journal is, for us, a manifestation of that particular semester’s dialogue between Brown and RISD students. At the close of each semester, we host a release party to call together the arts community on College Hill. Student artwork hangs on the walls, writers read their work, musicians perform their music and video installations loop as we sit and chat about the semester’s debates and discussions over homemade goodies and wine.

Preview two more works from this semester’s edition of Clerestory after the jump.  [Read more →]

BRB

Like the rest of this campus, we have to peace out for a few days to enjoy t(of)urkey, cranberry sauce and a shit ton of awkward family conversations. If you start feeling symptoms of BlogDailyWithdrawal (a rash in the shape of an angry bear head, hashtagged speech and an overly inflated sense of self worth are all sure signs), please contact your physician. On the upside, we won’t be gone long: we’ll be back, posting regularly, on Sunday. In the meantime, be sure to keep track of your crazy Thanksgiving adventures, and send them in as stories for our Bru Life story contest.

At long last, it’s Halloween. Thank you to everyone who submitted photos to our inaugural costume contest. Once again, Brown, you’ve impressed us with your creativity, wit and debauchery. Halloweek. Still truckin’.

After a night of snow/rain/slush pellets and wind of Dust Bowl proportions,  it’s snow wonder that we want to go out tonight and celebrate the return to October (just in time for November to come sweeping around the corner).  Whiskey Republic is celebrating Halloween tonight with drinks, dancing, costumes, and $4 cover.  You’d think they owe us after dropping the ball on Wednesday night.  Let’s celebrate Snowtoberfest with our very own Drunktoberfest!

Wanna be famous?: BlogDailyHerald’s Halloweek Costume Contest

Halloween is awkwardly taking place on a Monday this year. What does this mean? Should we buy one less 30 rack because we can’t bring Natty to 10 am Econ class? Will Halloween still be as special as it was last year? Never fear, Brunonia.

Meet BlogDailyHerald’s first annual Halloween costume contest. The premise is much like any other Halloween costume contest with a slight twist: have a friend take a picture of you in costume this week, and submit it along with your first name, first letter of your last name, class year and a brief description of your costume to  blog@browndailyherald.com. We’ll announce the winner of the contest on Monday morning, and  — here’s the kicker — every post on Monday, October 31 will use your costume photo as its featured picture. In addition, we’ll post our favorite runners-up on the blog and on our Facebook page. So, even when you’re stuck in classes on Monday without any Halloweek spirits, you’ll still be able to check BlogDH and feel the Halloween spirit.

Creativity will be the main standard we’ll use, but you’ll of course get extra points for apparent drunkenness, Brown relevance and group costuming. We’ll be accepting submissions until 5 pm on Sunday. Happy Halloweek, and we look forward to seeing your submissions!

Check out the Facebook event here.

An open casting call

Something exciting is cooking here at BlogDH headquarters. A new webseries entitled “THE BLOG” (clever, we know), directed by Travis Bogosian ’13 and written by Mike Makowsky ’13, is currently in the works. Each episode will be posted right here on BlogDailyHerald for all the world to see.

The series documents the daily lives of a ragtag team of BlogDH writers who, through a string of hilarious attempts to find their place in the Herald empire, end up finding themselves, too. Ever oppressed by the Herald’s editorial board, these bloggers are constant underdogs who are at once both awkwardly hilarious and hilariously awkward. Intrigued? Holler at us at blog@browndailyherald.com. We’ll send you a copy of the script and put you in touch with our film team. We are still looking to cast male roles.
