Last Call: Bridget McNamara

As the semester progresses at the speed of light, the senior class is beginning to make peace with that fateful day in May: Commencement. Until the Class of 2012 up and leaves us, BlogDH wants to highlight all the interesting things the class has been up to. To this end, we are (re)starting a series, Last Call, featuring seniors reflecting on their experiences at Brown. Each featured senior will tag another senior for the next installment. Find this year’s other “Last Call” chain here.

Then + Now

People might know me as…A field hockey captain and someone who wears a lot of backwards hats.

What will you remember most about your experience on the field hockey team? Definitely the camaraderie of the team: the dynamic that we’ve developed of being friends off the field and how that transfers to what we do on the field.

So how do you as a captain foster that camaraderie? There were three captains this fall and we did a really good job of including everyone from all four years — so, making a big effort to incorporate the freshmen into whatever we were doing as a team. We guided them and made sure that everyone was on the same page both in terms of field hockey and in academics and their social lives. We had the full picture in mind.

What is the best way to get your team pumped up before a game? We do a lot of, kind of, channeling aggression. We bang our sticks and do cheers before the game. But I think the main thing is making sure that everyone knows that they’re playing for Brown and that there’s school spirit and a team. That’s why you’re on the field.

On a Friday night, you might find yourself…At the GCB.  Continue Reading

Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 courses are on Banner

Class of 2013: you can start planning the rest of your lives now.

We’ve been told

In response to our and others’ criticisms of Brown Menu last fall, the site’s owners have implemented a complete revamp. It now looks sleeker and, more importantly, lets you to sign up to receive text and/or email notifications when BuDS is serving your favorite items. Just register for the site and start favorite-ing menu options by clicking the mouse-over heart icon that appears next to each item. The site also now has a tight favicon.

With God as my witness, I will never again miss another Gnocchi alla Sorentina dinner. In this blogger’s eyes, has officially moved up from FlogDailyHerald to (Campus)Lifehacker status.

Mini canapé bar at the Ratty

Is the Ratty rolling out the big guns tonight in response to today’s presidential announcement? (Or is the opposite true?!) This all seems a little too coincidental.

In case you don’t know what canapés are.

Did you really read Morning Mail?: See ya, vending stripe

In a move that likely followed years of administrative deliberation, Financial and Administrative Services announced January 19 that it would be phasing out the vending stripe on the Brown Card. Shortly, all vending purchases — including laundry, printing, and the sketchy personal pizzas available from the machine outside of Jo’s — will use the thick magnetic stripe and draw from students’ “Bear Bucks” accounts.

“Bear Bucks” is the new term for monopoly money Declining Balance, which will continue to serve as a payment option at Brown eateries and the bookstore.

According to a January 19 announcement in Morning Mail, only PAWPrints and copier stations have been upgraded so far, with upgrades to vending and laundry machines still pending. Most of the CVC machines on campus have been upgraded as well, so now only the CVC machines in the Bear’s Lair, the SciLi, and EmWool (outside of the V-Dub) will be available for adding money to the vending stripe.
