Did you really read Morning Mail? Korean barbecue edition

If you did last night, then this post is useless. If not, you are in for a serious treat. The venerable, ORIGINAL Thayer Street food truck is coming to the Blue Room. That’s right, the Blue Room will be serving Mama Kim’s starting tomorrow, THURSDAY, at 4:00 p.m., according to Morning Mail. The move to the Blue Room is, according to Hyun Kim ’01, all part of a plan to “bring Korean cuisine one step closer to the Brown community.”

The Hazeltine abides.

Now, the intensity with which one believes in the absolute truth of Morning Mail may vary from student to student, but I suggest you all heed this warning: If you really love Korean barbecue and can’t wait for the truck to get here, RUN — don’t walk, this is supposedly a “trial run” with a “limited amount of food available” — to the Blue Room Thursday afternoon. Adding Mama Kim’s to the 4:00 p.m. Blue Room rush is sure to cause a near riot in Faunce, so if you don’t like crowds or really good-smelling food, you might want to find another place to hang out tomorrow afternoon.

6 places we wish The Glitch Mob played on Saturday night

In case you missed it, what seemed like about one-fifth of the student body (if you don’t believe me, check the picture below) stalked the Glitch Mob across campus on Saturday night after their killer Spring Weekend mix. Much to the Bro-Po’s chagrin, the LA trio was pretty insistent on getting an after-party in somewhere, leading to a cat-and-mouse chase from Meeting to Charlesfield and back.

No books.

Though it certainly beat any real or imagined Biltmore suite Ciroc-fueled orgy with Diddy & entourage, we do think the Glitch Mob missed some spots on campus — some better protected from the police, some just plain awesome. Here are six places where we think they might have been able to play a set for longer than 20 minutes: [Read more →]

FB Photo Zoom / Hover Zoom
Ever wish you didn’t have to click on a picture in your News Feed to see what it was? (Yes, this is the power of being a lazy college student). With FB Photo Zoom, you can rectify that and more. By passing your mouse over any picture on Facebook (be it a tiny profile thumbnail or a photo in a link), the image appears over the page next to your mouse in its original size. Time-waster of the day: April 24, 2012

Now in its 23rd season, The Simpsons is the longest-running sitcom in American television history. The show continues to make headlines as it surprises its viewers: It recently “dissed” Fox News during Fox’s 25th anniversary celebration and finally revealed what state the Simpsons actually live in (Oregon). So, if you happen to have 48 minutes to spare, here is a supercut of every appearance “Itchy & Scratchy” has made on the show over the past 504 episodes. Enjoy!

WTF is happening on the Main Green? PUPPIES!

Puppies, everywhere!

Health Education and Health Services held Heavy Petting on the Main Green, when Brown staff and faculty brought their dogs to school for the petting/making-silly-noises benefit of the student body.

Held once or twice a semester, Heavy Petting helps relief the stress of upcoming final exams, papers and projects.

Better hurry: The dogs are only here from 11:30 to 1:00.

This week in The Herald: Socioeconomic status and the Brown experience

This week, The Herald is publishing a four-part series exploring the role of socioeconomic status in the Brown education and experience. Titled “Money Matters,” the series examines an issue that has become particularly salient in recent months — how money influences Brown students’ admission, matriculation, campus experiences and life after Brown.

With the departure of President Ruth Simmons and arrival of incoming President Christina Paxson, the University has entered a transition period during which old priorities are examined and new ones may begin to take shape. In 2003, Simmons instituted need-blind admissions for domestic first-year applicants. Paxson, meanwhile, is one of several administrators who has expressed interest in expanding financial aid and concern about steadily climbing tuition. And the formation of a new student group, Brown for Financial Aid, has helped bring the issue of socioeconomic status to the forefront of student discussions. No matter what priorities President-elect Paxson eventually outlines, it is clear these issues are relevant to the community at large and should be thoroughly explored.

Through this series, The Herald hopes to help inform and add to the discussions surrounding socioeconomic status and financial aid at Brown. Yesterday’s story looks at the history of and current breakdown of class representation at Brown. Today, The Herald examines Brown’s aid offerings and priorities, comparing them to those at peer institutions. Tomorrow’s article will reflect on how students interact with peers of different social classes, and on Thursday, the series will look at how socioeconomic backgrounds influence the careers that Brown students ultimately pursue. These stories attempt to place disparate discussions about money and class in a larger, more unified context. We welcome your thoughts and input — whether in the form of letters, comments or continued discussions with fellow members of the Brown community.

I eyed you… responding to an important student need.

As reading period approaches, a word of advice to those kidding themselves trying to avoid new forms of procrastination: Beware the Eyeds of Brown!

The correct grammar is appreciated, really, but why isn't it, "Whom did you eye?"

The latest campus anonymous site Eyed at Brown is truly a sight for sore eyes, or at least for those wishing for a Spotted at Brown replacement. Despite its kind of weird name — seriously, what’s wrong with Seen or Sighted or even Noticed at Brown? — and somewhat creepy eye URL icon, E@B is already  racking up a promising collection of posts, not to mention its comments feature (which for some reason automatically posts your city location), lack of censors, and clean, minimalist design. No search function or polls yet, but hopefully Eyed will be less prone to spamming and hacking, so we can all express ourselves online in peace. Or something.

Happy eying!

State of the City: Quahogs and porn

What the Quahog? While you were stumbling around this weekend and enjoying the wonderful music of Sepalcure, Rhode Island was dealing with bigger problems (than the line outside Fratty at the Ratty). According to WPRI, in an attempt to “replenish [the] local shellfish population,” the state is going to transport 150,000 pounds of “adult quahogs” to a “shellfish management” zone. Don’t know what a quahog is? Neither did we… but a quick google search resulted in the following probable definition: a quahog is a hard-shelled clam, native to the New England area. Here’s hoping that this will work! #riproblems

Providence: leading the nation in something? Providence was recently named one of the 25 most porn-friendly cities in Men’s Health. Coming in at number 21, it beat out notable cities in Ohio and everyone’s favorite, New Jersey. Apparently, the rankings were determined by analyzing the numbers of DVDs bought or watched online and number of “adult entertainment stores per city.”

Election roundup, cont. GoLocalProv crowned Rhode Island’s newest congressional candidate with a “Who’s Not [Hot]“ rating to this week, calling Anthony Gemma’s entrance into the race for the 1st district’s seat “bizarre.” Gemma has been very reluctant to speak to the press about, well, anything and won’t acknowledge Cicilline. Snubbing just isn’t cool. Ever.
