EUGENE, ORE. — With a year full of shake-ups for the track and field program, there is one thing that is certain: Craig Kinsley ’11 is this year’s best collegiate javelin thrower in Division I athletics. With the championship meet being held at the storied Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., it is fitting Kinsley continued his storied career with a title winning throw of 250 feet, 3 inches. His throw bettered that of Pontus Thomee of Boise State by 8 feet, 3 inches. Kinsley finished the 2010 season with his third consecutive Ivy League title and bettered his national finish of third from a year ago. Additionally, Brynn Smith ’11 finished 18th nationally in women’s hammer throw and Duriel Hardy ’10 was 21st in men’s 10,000-meter run.
Kinsley’s win is the first time since 1952 that a Brown athlete has owned a National Outdoor Championship, according to Brown Athletics. We’ll have much more on the big Brunonian bonanza in The Herald’s upcoming summer issue.

Remember 1979? With No. 12 Cornell’s upset victory today over No. 5 Temple in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, an Ivy League team has a shot to go past the second round for the first time in 31 years. In that year’s tournament, Penn made it all the way to the Final Four after a huge second-round upset of Dean Smith’s No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels. Still, eventual winner Michigan State—who had some guy named Earvin “Magic” Johnson—smoked Penn in the Final Four by 34 points. Since then, five Ivies have made it to the second round only to bow out. The Big Red will have a chance to avoid that fate on Sunday against the winner of the Wisconsin-Wofford game.
UPDATE: Wofford fell just short against UWisc. Looks like there will be a lot of red at the Cornell game.

Perry ’00. Courtesy of brownbears.com
The Bears’ quarterbacks coach will start Thursday as offensive coordinator for the Tigers.
“I have nothing but good things to say about him,” Brown Head Coach Phil Estes said of Perry, who could not be reached for comment Wednesday. “The things that he did for us and our quarterback were tremendous. And it’s hard for me to have him go.”
Perry inherits an offense which placed last in scoring in the Ivy League last season. Estes will take on his duties as quarterbacks coach. Read the full story at browndailyherald.com.

After closing out the regular season with a 3-0 win over Dartmouth on Sunday, the men’s soccer team had to wait to find out if they had earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Bears were rewarded on Monday evening with a place in the 48-team field.
Brown (10-2-5, 5-2-0 Ivy) will host Stony Brook (6-9-4) on Thursday night at 7:00 at Stevenson Field.
Check Wednesday’s Herald for an article by Katie Wood recapping the Dartmouth game and previewing the NCAA opener.

Lots of winners this week. Why? I can think of three possible reasons: as an apology for taking several weeks off (I blame midterms), because I’m a nice guy, or, just maybe, because a lot of teams did well. I say it’s all three.

Remember the Seinfeld episode where Jerry always breaks even? Yeah, this was that week for Brown sports. See for yourself below if you don’t believe me. Hence, there are no Winners and no Bad News Bears this week. There is only a vague sliding scale of quality that exists only in my head. Deal with it.

It came down to the wire, but the Bears’ Friday night football game against Harvard ended in the Crimson’s favor, 24-21.
The Bears led 14-10 at halftime in Cambridge, with two rushes into the endzone by wide receiver Bobby Sewall ’10. Harvard struck back with two touchdowns in the second half to go up 24-14.
Brown answered with another Sewall touchdown in the last minute of the fourth quarter. A recovered onside kick gave Brown a last chance at victory, but the Bears’ comeback effort came up short with an incomplete endzone pass.
Check back soon for complete game coverage and photos.
