Pizza Nite: SciLi TONIGHT, Rock Tomorrow

What college student ever turns down free pizza?

What college student ever turns down free pizza?

Tonight at the SciLi and tomorrow at the Rock, the epic semesterly tradition know as “Pizza Nite” will take place at 9pm, according to Morning Mail. If you’ve never been, get ready.

Pizza Nite is probably one of the best free food events of the semester. First, there’s the anticipation. The crowds are waiting, growing larger and increasingly impatient. The pizza never arrives on time. Then, suddenly, the big moment arrives — library workers emerge with stacks of pizza boxes. The crowd goes nuts for the pizza, and you wonder if there will be any left when you get to the front of the line. Just then, 20 more boxes of pizza arrive, putting your fears to rest. As the pizza continues to disappear, another dozen boxes come along, then another dozen. In the end, something like a hundred pizzas are consumed in the span of a few minutes. (Then they bring out some cookies and fruit.) [Read more →]

Sexction: Are you Homo-hesitant?

Author’s note: I used “gay” in this article to mean gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, queer, trans. I’m sorry if I should have used a more inclusive term but gay and homo are the most common terms I use with my friends. I know this isn’t the same thing as being transsexual, for example. Please feel free to include yourself under any, all, or none of the terms used in the article. I apologize in advance if I insult anyone, it’s not my intention.

At Brown, the sexuality spectrum runs the gamut from straight as an arrow to gay as RuPaul. Our campus is more colorful than ROY G BIV, so it’s rare to find a truly homophobic voice on campus. That’s not to say that everyone on campus open-heartedly embraces freedom of sexuality, but I can’t remember the last time I heard an openly hostile homophobic argument within the Van Wickle Gates. If you want to hear a discussion on the sanctity of the institution of marriage, you’ll probably have to wait for the next spicy Janus lecture series.

But recently something struck me as equally noxious on this campus – homohesitancy. What is homohesitancy? And how do you know if you’re infected with it? Before I get there, let me tell you a story to illustrate the point. [Read more →]

Study break of the day: December 12, 2011

Looking for the perfect holiday gift for the TA you’ve been obsessed with all semester  that special someone? Here’s a site that shows you what not to get. While Etsy is generally a good place to find one-of-a-kind gems, it’s also where arts and crafts go very very wrong. Regretsy assembles the funny, the suggestive, and the “why does this exist?!” all in one place, so you know what isn’t appropriate for a holiday gift… and what to buy for that second cousin you really dislike. Happy holiday shopping!

Even more ways to procrastinate: the Organ concert

AGAIN?!?!  Yes.

Just when you thought that finals period had completely sucked away your will to live, the Intergalactic Community of A Capella came to the rescue with a glass-shattering rendition of “All Rise.” The usual rules apply: bring blankets, food and, if you’re feeling especially daring, a bottle of Strongbow. The Facebook event also promises that the portraits in Sayles will come alive and join in the festivities, so, yeah, there’s always that if you’re not into the whole music thing. We know that you have a shit ton of work, but so does everyone else.

The concert, taking place in Sayles, starts at midnight (but get there earlier if you want good seats!) and goes until 2 am.

Lots o’ latkes tonight at Hillel (where else?)

While supposedly 25 percent of Brown is Jewish, I’m going to go out on a limb and guestimate (all Occupy jokes aside) that 99 percent of Brown loves latkes. So get ‘em hot, get ‘em fresh at tonight’s Hillel Hanukkah Bash from 7 – 10 pm. Latkes, dance performances and a cappella! But mostly latkes.

Alums who do cool things: Colin Cloherty ’09 Scores TD for Jaguars

Two years ago today, Colin Cloherty ’09 was probably spending his Sunday like the rest of us during reading period–holed up in the stacks wondering how that 12-15 page paper was going to write itself in the next 18 hours. Fast forward two years, and the former history concentrator has traded in neocolonialism for an NFL touchdown.

After only being activated by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Cloherty scored his first career NFL touchdown Sunday when he scooped up a fumbled Tampa Bay punt and ran it 8 yards into the end zone. At the time, the Jags were trailing 14-0, and Cloherty’s score was a game-changer. [Read more →]

Jabberwock Chris Unseth ’11.5 proposes to Sarah Gassel ’11.5 at archsing

Warning:  Do not watch the above video if you can’t handle overwhelming cuteness or explosive happiness.

Friday night, a crowd of adoring fans got to witness a special moment as soloist Chris Unseth ’11.5 pulled his girlfriend Sarah Gassel ’11.5 from the crowd and sang to her, then knelt and asked her to marry him. The crowd roared as she accepted, flowers came out of nowhere and the two embraced. Andrew Kim ’13 captured it all on camera, so now students who weren’t there (or couldn’t see past the huge crowd) can experience the moment, too.

Friends of Chris and Sarah, who know the couple as “beautiful people inside and out,” look forward to watching their life together unfold. We at BlogDH wish them endless happiness in their post-Brown and married life!
