Last Call: Marc Briz

As the semester progresses at the speed of light, the senior class is beginning to make peace with that fateful day in May: Commencement. Until the class of 2014 leaves us, BlogDH wants to highlight all the interesting things they’ve been up to. To this end, we’re (re)starting the series Last Call, which features seniors reflecting on their experiences at Brown. Each featured senior will tag another senior for the next installment. Find this year’s other “Last Call” chain here.

Then + Now

People might know me as…  Jeggings. Golf sweaters. Rockefeller Library resident. Laughter that has no respect for quiet spaces. History and Middle East Studies concentrator with an affinity for the following buzzwords: queer ontologies, digital nonfiction, discursive violence. Coffee.

In my time at Brown, I am most proud of…  Making friends I’ll want to play with until I’m 88. Seriously, I can’t get enough of these kids—and that will bring me more warmth than any resumé bullet point can muster.

On a Friday night, you might find yourself… I’m definitely dancing. Most often in a crowded living room. I’m relentlessly trying to conjure my hometown Little Havana, Miami and all its hip swings and yelling and aggressive gesticulating. I’m a whirlwind of limbs. And it’s all a result of a magical, Isabel Allende-inspired upbringing. It’s my best form of prayer.

The best class/professor at Brown is… An impossible question. Best lecturer is Robert Self. Best seminar faciltator is Maud Mandel. Best humble radical is Amy Remensnyder. Best office hour holder and Twitter user is Shiva Balaghi. Best (anti-imperialist) writing mentor is Naoko Shibusawa. Is it obvious I love my department? Continue Reading

People might know me as… The Girl With a Hoop Earring. My cumin addiction is big talk around town, too. Also, I spend a lot of time editing The College Hill Independentwhich was recently shortlisted for a Pulitzer. So that’s that. But if you want the real me, the serious, the unadulterated, the “I’m not a girl, not yet a woman” thing, check @dstfelix.

In my time at Brown, I am most proud of… Black Girls. That’s the title of my nonfiction thesis. It’s a collection of essays—about my mother, Lauryn Hill, Michelle Obama… there’s even a little thing about Lil Kim in there too. Why did people stop listening to her? And I’m most proud of black girls. The beautiful women walking around this campus, they make me proud to be a part of that sisterhood.

On a Friday night, you might find yourself… face down, ass up, in the downward dog position. I think it’s super important that one center oneself before engaging in any shishinou. That’s French. I also just made that word up. So after aligning my chakras, I love to just roll down to the west side on my bike, Isis, and find a dance party.

The best class/professor at Brown is… the class you make outside of the classroom with your intelligent, wondering, and off-beat friends.  Continue Reading

People might know me as…
The student who works in the History Department who will tell you how to find the bathroom. But I’ve really been working on crafting my mysterious senior persona this year, so I hope that’s kicking in.

In my time at Brown, I am most proud of…
At my most sentimental I think I’m probably most proud of the friendships and communities I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of and build here. In less sentimental moments I’m just proud that I finished my thesis.

On a Friday night, you might find yourself…
Having dinner and drinks with friends and then either going to a party or chilling at home. There have also been plenty of Friday nights when I did my homework or just wanted some time to myself. Continue Reading

Then+Now

People might know me as…
Someone once told me they identified me on campus as the girl with the shiny black combat boots. But, probably, the girl who directed Hair.

In my time at Brown, I am most proud of…
Directing Hair with Musical Forum. For sure. Hair is a show that has lived in my soul since the first time I saw it performed. To be able to unleash it here is something I will forever be grateful for. I can’t take all of the credit for it, though. Everyone involved contributed something so special to the process. I guess what I am most proud of is bringing all of those people together with the goal to create something meaningful and beautiful.

On a Friday night, you might find yourself…
Definitely starting the night with some performance on campus—a cappella concert, theater, comedy, etc. One of my favorite aspects of Brown is how much we support and appreciate each other’s work. Probably freshman and sophomore year I would have gone out to a party afterwards. Now, I’d probably go to a friend’s house to drink cheap wine and talk with people that I love! My house has this outdoor screened-in porch with Christmas lights, plants, and a futon. We’ve named it the Moon Room and it’s the absolute bomb. As soon it gets warm out I’ll be spending every night in there. Continue Reading
