After a Winter Break-long hiatus, BlogWeeklyJamz is back. We’ll be adding a new genre to the mix each week, but for now, the first week of non-shopping period, here are five jamz!
Indie – Shugo Tokumaru – Katachi I cannot play music or sing music or write music, so I inevitably decided that making music videos would be my calling. You just have to like music! And put some colors on a wall! And dress the band in weird hats! … No. This new Shogu Tokumaru video makes it clear that I don’t have the necessary patience to make little cut-outs of wolves and wine bottles.
Jam of the Week – Jakwob ft. Maiday – Fade
I am such a sucker for songs that have loaded silences. Listen to 1:02 and 2:29. That shit don’t play around.

Dude that car is gonna hit you!!! Oh, I forgot you had the power of love lol.
Jam of the Week – Autre Ne Veut – Counting
Jeezum crow, this is a damn good song! It’s Pitchfork-approved but also makes me want to sensually body roll. Awkward when I found out it was a song dedicated to his dead grandma.
Indie – Shugo Tokumaru – Decorate
This a cool new video from my main man Shugo, but his two masterpieces are still Green Rain, which changes time signatures like a motherfucker, and Rum Hee, which I have played during the walk in-between Governor St and the Bio Med building more than I feel comfortable admitting. それに, it’s funny to try to sing along to the Japanese and fail. Electronic – Kate Boy – Northern Lights
Admittedly more Electro-Pop than Electronic, but Kate Boy rocks in the general tradition of Purity Ring and The Knife. They’re also from Sweden and we all know they put something in the water in Sweden. (Ed.- evidence).
Jam of the Week – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Same Love
It’s probably getting inappropriate to gloat about the election, BUT EQUALITY MOTHERFUCKING WON. Gay marriage is legal in three more states, (and a gay marriage ban was defeated in one more), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) was elected as our first openly gay Senator. The fight is far from over, but I’m proud of America this week.
Hip-Hop – Earl Sweatshirt – Chum
Ughhhh hangover songgggg that repetitive piano hook is swaddling my brainnnn yusssssss.
Indie – Das Racist – Girl
I understand that the consensus at Brown is that Das Racist “totally sucked at Spring Weekend” but they’re actually really great. I maintain that their terribleness on stage was due to their being beyond impaired, not that they aren’t talented. Peep one of their videos above featuring an inexplicable knife fight halfway through. How can you not love them? Continue Reading
Jam of the Week – Girl Talk – All Day (Chapter 11)
Hurricane Sandy was really mean to my beloved New York City this week, so I think the city deserves some recognition for being totally weird and resilient and diverse and awesome. In this badass feature-length music video “Girl Walk // All Day,” a group of dancers shake it from the Financial District to Central Park all while accompanied by the entirety of Girl Talk’s album “All Day.” Chapter 11 is above, but you should watch the whole thing.
PBR&B – Frank Ocean – Scared of Beautiful (Demo)
If you haven’t listened to Frank Ocean yet — YOU REALLY SHOULD. If you’ve listened to Frank Ocean and you don’t like him, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU? Everyone one of his songs is perfect: Exhibit A + Exhibit B + Exhibit C. Here’s a new demo from my future husband.
Indie – Sufjan Stevens – “Mr. Frosty Man”
I worship Sufjan Stevens. This guy is simultaneously (a) the strangest hipster of all time and (b) possibly a manifestation of all goodness in the world. Here’s the awesomely gory video for “Mr. Frosty Man” off his upcoming Christmas-themed box set, “Silver & Gold.” Additionally, the “Sufjohn Stevens Christmas Sing-A-Long: Seasonal Affective Disorder Yuletide Disaster Pageant on Ice” Christmas tour, (not making that up) is coming to Providence!
Middle School Pop Punk Banger – Bowling for Soup – “Girl All The Bad Guys Want”
So much angst I straight up didn’t understand as a 13 year old, but I totally empathized with the nerdy dude who only “got’s a moped … moped… moped.” I think that I learned what a moped was in 2007.
