A Million Words: Highlights from Gambino’s Spring Weekend set

By the time Childish Gambino got on stage, I was a bit of a mess. I had four whole key limes in my purse and was wearing a balloon animal hat, or as I had requested: “a head thing with all the colors but also has a dog on it.” I had lost my group of friends, and I was feeling alone and confused and thirsty and dejected. But when Childish started rapping “Freaks and Geeks,” all that ceased to matter. The DTau bros next to me? The couple inappropriately sucking each other’s faces off behind me? They all became my friends when the crowd was screaming: “YEAH THAT’S POETRY IN MOTION.” Thanks, Art House Sixty, for capturing some of the energy of the best night of my life.

Though I do wish I had found my friend (and Blog columnist) Remy in the crowd. Apparently she “sensually squeezed” his bicep.

Childish Gambino drops new track

Our favorite 4/20 headliner (could we have asked for better?) just released the song “Eat Your Vegetables.” No lyrics about studying rape culture at Brown in this pretty chill track as far as we can tell, although it does include a very timely Trayvon Martin shout-out.

The preliminary Spring Weekend drank list

In case you’ve been living under a rock (or at the Rock), or have already gone MIA for Spring Break, the BCA announced the lineup for the most anticipated weekend of the semester. Preparations have begun, as people dust off their Hazeltine tanks and start obsessing over the weather reports. So BlogDH has compiled a (preliminary) list of drank suggestions, with the help of Drinkify, that correspond to this year’s performers. Rage responsibly.

Time-waster of the day: November 15th, 2011

In honor of Camp, the much anticipated first label release by Community star Donald Glover’s rap alter ego Childish Gambino, dropping today, we thought it would be fun to rewind 5 years to the heyday of Glover’s old comedy group, Derrick Comedy.  Check out “Drunk Baby” above and a bunch of our other favorites after the jump. Gambino make it work (but for real this time)

Ever since we first listened to “Freaks and Geeks” from his “EP” release this past spring, we’ve been waiting for this album. “Camp” does not disappoint, but this is no average music review. We are pleased to announce that Childish Gambino referenced Brown on the record in his track “Backpackers.” Gambino (aka Donald Glover/Troy from Community/That dude from “Bro Rape”) rants at the 1:09 mark:

“I wrote on rape culture my junior year at Brown, so I’m allowed to say what all his raps are about.”

He of course responds to this (presumably) imaginary Brown student by warning him/her to “shut your mouth before I f**k it.” Hard to imagine this coming from the same guy who was unable to speak to Levar Burton.

Frankly, Gambino, we’re honored. We’re proud of classes like GNSS1960N: Theories and Politics of Sexual Consent, and, if being somewhat intellectually snobby means that we get name dropped in arguably the best track of your album, we’ll keep on truckin’.

If you want to listen to “Camp,” (and, believe us, you do) check it out here.

Now, if we can just get this shoutout to translate into a headlining Spring Weekend performance, we’ll be set.  RESIST THE LURE OF COACHELLA, CHILDISH!
