Amuse-Bouche: Teas and Javas

Those of us who were old lucky enough to know The Edge, that beloved Wayland Square coffee shop, mourned all the more heavily when, totally out of nowhere, it closed last year. Its amazing coffee, full wall of windows, and tucked-away-ness all made it a fantastic hidden study spot—and don’t even get me started on its granola. So when I heard that a new coffee shop, Teas and Javashad opened in the same space, I was equal parts amped and skeptical. Could it ever fill the empty place The Edge had left in our hearts?

First impressions didn’t have me convinced. Compared to The Edge’s cozy, college-y feel, T&J’s is more sleek and grown-up. It’s decorated in mostly blacks and silvers, with big glass dome lights and simple black chairs that make it feel very modern, clean, and hard. In a different way, though, it’s also very conducive to work: There are plugs everywhere, and a tall 10-seat table is especially accommodating to everyone who shows up to study. And they’re open ’til 11—hurrah. Another holdover from before is the huge wall of windows that looks out onto Wayland Avenue, which can be opened when the weather’s nice to make everything feel all breezy. While that won’t be happening for another few months, the windows will let in plenty of natural light in cold, dark winter.

Sans Meal Plan: Leap Day Madness

Fun Fact: Did you know that Ja Rule is a leaper? For anyone who doesn’t know what that means, a “leaper” (not “leper”) is someone born on Leap Day, or February 29. This is an extra cool birthday for anyone looking for the fountain of youth because you can technically exploit your age by saying you’re a quarter of however many years old you actually are. So, happy ninth birthday, Ja Rule!

As I recently learned from a particularly hilarious episode of 30 Rock, Leap Day is a day of endless possibilities when Leap Day William emerges from the Mariana Trench to trade children’s tears for candy. That sounds legitimate, right? Regardless, it’s made clear that Leap Day gives us the opportunity to do whatever we want just for the heck of it because it “doesn’t count” — after all, it’s a magical day that isn’t real. I’m not one to do things completely out of character, a situation Liz Lemon found herself caught in, but, as a foodie, I like to believe that Leap Day can be a day to eat whatever and whenever you want without consequences. In other words, Leap Day William tells me that I could eat anything in the world without running the risk of permanent arterial damage or becoming overwhelmingly full. Oh, what a joyous day that would be! Continue Reading

Decorate cupcakes and cookies in the Ratty!

Last year on St. Patrick's Day, the Ratty had decorate-your-own cupcakes.

It looks like the Ratty is having a Valentine’s Day special, as the desert listed for today’s lunch is “Decorate Cupcakes and Cookies.” Yum!

It's a sculpture, made out of ice!

Cupcakes and fruit tarts and cheesecakes, oh my!

Alright, we take back everything we’ve ever said about the Ratty.

Make your way down to the lovely Sharpe Refectory for fruit tarts, piña colada and s’mores cupcakes, tiramisu, and vegan strawberry and Oreo cheesecake. We’re lovin’ this more than Blue Room focaccia and V-Dub CFF combined.

Why? Just ‘cause.

Cupcake Extravaganza at the Ratty

The Ratty really likes its cupcakes. Today, it’s really outdone itself with a little number known as the “Cupcake Extravaganza.” Knowing that most of you won’t arrive for lunch until 12, here’s a little preview of what you’re in for.

Welcome to Le Hotel Ratty. Would you like champagne with your cupcake?
