Look Back @ It: Thayer Street edition

As we transition from #fallfoliage to the cruel reality of a real New England winter, it’s easy to forget that College Hill sheds more than just its leaves every season. Shops and restaurants are constantly opening their doors, followed by a review by yours truly, and continue to exist for a period that ranges anywhere from 1 year to a century. The initial shock that inevitably hits Brunonia when a store is closed, followed by the sweet anticipation of a new franchise, is all part of the emotional rollercoaster that students experience during their time at Brown. Maybe I’m drawing too much from my own personal meltdown when Shades Plus went “out of business,” which for me really reaffirmed that nothing lasts forever.

Thayer Street in particular has witnessed a hefty amount of storefront makeovers, recently bringing a new Sushi Cafe (review to come!) into the old location of the beloved Spats, and spontaneously kicking out City Sports in an eight-day period of “EVERYDAY WE SELL IS BASICALLY FREE.”

After all of its ups and downs, Thayer deserves a post dedicated to its transformation through the years. Thayer Street, you may not realize it because you’re just asphalt, but we’ve known you since you were a baby.

Store 24 to Tedeschi to ???

The only online review of Store 24 is scathing, a direct quote being “You get a dirty feeling just walking into this place.” Tedeschi Food Shops eventually took its place and quickly gained a cult following with its bizarre yet price-friendly selection of goods. Tears were shed when it closed, and its disappearance even inspired a “ghost of Tedeschi” Halloween costume in Fall 2012. Now the storefront next to Chipotle is completely vacant.

Esta’s to Toledo: Pizza in a Cone to 257 Thayer

The funky atmosphere at Esta’s included a gift shop, video rental business, and bike shop … but unfortunately the demise of video renting in general ended its reign in 2004.

However, Esta’s was soon replaced with Toledo: Pizza in a Cone. Reviews of this place ranged from “Hidden gem!” to “I had the misfortune of downing one of these pizza in a cone’s in January 2011.” Now the area is dominated by the 257 Thayer apartment complex … an arguable downgrade from pizza cones.

30 thoughts this senior has about senior year

Not even the beautiful fall foliage or Oprah’s Cinnamon Chai Latte (rage against the PSL!) can help me cope with the emotional toll of senior year. I can’t really put into words exactly how I feel, as I feel like I feel it all. Anyway, I’ll try to articulate these “feely” feelings as best as I can. Here’s a list of a few senior year-musings I’ve had recently:

Classes

1. (Beginning of the year) Can I audit 10 classes? So much to learn, so little time!

2. I’ve sat in on 10 more classes. I’ve learned nothing and I’m exhausted. Hello, friendly 4-course structure!

3. When did shopping period end? Or right, it’s October.

4. I’ve gone to pretty much all of this professor’s office hours, but apparently my name is still “Maria”.

5. I guess we aren’t BFFs after all </3

6. I am taking a graduate seminar and I feel cool.

7. I am taking a graduate seminar and my soul is dead.

8. Ok, whoever said senior year was chill has less chill than whoever took this snap.

Professional life

9. Should I start a start-up? Wait, do you “start” a start-up or “create” it? “Initiate” a start-up? What is the self?

10. LinkedIn is a cold and dry vortex of superficiality and also I probably shouldn’t use this selfie as my profile photo…

11. “Describe your previous job experience”: crying over not having job experience.

12. “Describe your computer skills”: I am a fast typer and my Neopets are all still alive, albeit “famished”.

13. For the 100th time, dear auntie, I am doing philosophy and cognitive science.

14. No, dear auntie, I’m not considering law school (or a lawyer husband) after Brown.

Activities

15. GCB challenge, SciLi challenge, Ratty challenge… MY BODY KNOWS NO LIMITS.

16. I should hit the Nelson Fitness Center more often. Just kidding, my body is well aware of its limits.

17. I need to get off the hill more often. Geoff’s doesn’t count. [Ed. note: Geoff’s counts on Two-For-One Tuesdays]

18. I should go to more WaterFires, even though I don’t exactly know what one should do at WaterFire.

19. Is this hill getting steeper each year, or am I just getting old? Was that my hip that just popped?

We would like to congratulate Herald Senior Editor Maddie Berg ’15 for the creation of the “Brunonian” sandwich! This sandwich contains hot turkey, apple, cheddar, and honey mustard on a buttered, toasted superlative roll. Berg credits her win to her favorite ingredient. “It’s all about the apple—crisp, refreshing, and the perfect tang,” said Berg.

BlogDH would like to thank Geoff’s Superlative Sandwiches for giving us the opportunity to make this sandwich. It is truly an honor to have  a created sandwich for Brunonians that is now on the famous chalkboard menu. Head to Geoff’s to taste this new creation.

SPONSORED: Geoff’s Superlative Sandwiches is adding a new Brunonian flavor

With over 85 sandwiches on its famous chalkboard menu, Geoff’s Superlative Sandwiches has been a College Hill staple for over 40 years. “People keep coming back,” says Julio Fonseca, the owner of the shop. “We get graduates who have not been here for 30 years. They say they love how everything is the same and that they can still order their favorite sandwich.” Julio, a native of Portugal, bought the sandwich shop from Geoff himself seventeen years ago.

While Julio wanted to stay true to Geoff’s creation, a few changes have been made such as the now famous 2 for 1 Tuesdays. What has not changed are the delicious sandwiches. “We have PhDs in sandwich making,” says the shop’s manager, John Reinhardt. When customers have trouble deciding which of the many options to order, employees usually point them in the direction of the eatery’s most popular menu item: The Juggs. This delicious sandwich includes hot turkey, bacon, cheddar, cranberry, and Shedd’s sauce, all on a superlative roll. “You don’t have these combinations at home,” says Julio. “When you come to Geoff’s, you get a sandwich you can’t get anywhere else.”

Each sandwich also has its own creative name, with some named after famous politicians, bands, and Rhode Island natives. As a side to the sandwich, Geoff’s is known for its white bucket of all-you-can-eat pickles situated in the middle of the room. Students also might see more of Geoff’s in the near future. Julio has thought about re-opening a Thayer Street location or potentially creating a food truck. Geoff’s used to be on Thayer a few years back, but it was forced out when a new owner purchased the building it occupied. Julio and John say that Brown students are their best customers and that they have loved meeting new students as the years have gone by.

Now Julio wants to make an exciting addition to this established eatery: add a sandwich called The Brunonian. In his mind, the sandwich would be modeled after the Brown Bear and include salmon, hot spinach, cranberry, and other tasty ingredients. Julio wants to hold a contest, however, and have the students decide on the contents of the sandwich.

Chow Down Brown: Geoff’s sandwiches you can recreate on meal plan

My first Geoff’s experience was four years ago when my family and I made the trek up I-95 for my older sister’s college visits. While I wish the instant I sunk my teeth into that superlative sandwich was the moment I knew Brunonia held a spot in my future, I remember being unimpressed by its flavor and only semi-appreciated the giant barrel of free pickles. Then again, I made the rookie mistake of creating my own boring sandwich. I now know that the extensive sandwich board serves to work in your favor — don’t mess with it. Four years later and over three months into my freshman year, I ventured down Meeting Street for a second taste — and, as my friend’s Instagram caption reveals, a meal that is truly “heaven between two slices of bread.”  Although the making of these sandwiches is debatably art, and the vibe of the establishment certainly plays into its deliciousness factor, here are some ways to recreate a Geoff’s original with the simple swipe of your ID: Continue Reading
