Sunday marks the beginning of this year’s Brown Unplugged competition, an annual energy competition that pits dorms against each other to see which community can reduce its energy consumption by the greatest percentage. Now in its fifth year, the competition will run for three weeks, through March 21st. Last year, with 750 registered participants, Brown saved over 34,000 kWh of electricity during this period, amounting to $4,448 in savings. When the competition begins, energy stats and progress for the different buildings can be tracked on BuildingDashboard.
Brown EcoReps, a student group aiming to raise environmental awareness and sustainable living habits, is encouraging participation through incentives, prizes, and additional events during the competition, including LED lightbulb exchanges in the Blue Room every Friday during the event, as well as their second dodgeball competition. To encourage intra-dorm competition, the participants of the winning dorm will be awarded a pizza party and will be entered in a raffle to win prizes including Spring Weekend tickets.

Sure, you might have heard of Earth Day, but we at Brown celebrate Earth Week (hence the new BlogDH banner)! That’s right: an entire week dedicated to saving the planet and forming some eco-friendly habits. As Brown students are known for being ecologically conscious, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there are a ton of events planned for this “green” week.
Below is a round-up of some of the most interesting events (with descriptions quoted from the Brown Earth Week web site) planned by the emPower committee:
Tuesday, April 22 (Earth Day!)
Event: Earth Day Dinner
When: Dinner (duh.)
The Ratty will have a local food night to celebrate Earth day. If that wasn’t enough, several food groups will also be there with yummy goodies!
Wednesday, April 23
Event: Yoga on The Green
Where: Ruth J. Simmons Quad
When: 4:00 – 5:30 p.m.
“Get in touch with Mother Nature this Earth Week at Yoga on the Green! Co-sponsored by YAM, we’ll be hosting a special outdoor yoga class featuring all of your favorite tree poses and flying pigeons. You do not want to miss this opportunity to sun salute with the sun. There will be limited mats available, so better to bring your own if you can. If you haven’t tried open-air yoga, it rules.”
Brown took home a perfect A in college sustainability by The College Sustainability Report Card. We got A’s all around in the categories of Administration, Climate Change & Energy, Food & Recycling, Green Building, Student Involvement, Transportation, Endowment Transparency, Investment Priorities, and Shareholder Engagement. Good thing we took that ABC and not SN/C.
And just as the report was released, an email was sent out this morning announcing the 2010 Campus Conservation Competition in which dorms and students will compete to see who can conserve the most. The competition is sponsored by Residential Life, the Energy & Environmental Office of Facilities Management and the Brown EcoReps, according to the email.
