Born in Greece, educated in the United Kingdom and nowadays often featured prominently in lists of the most influential women in media, Arianna Huffington has a long list of accomplishments to her name. Perhaps her best known feat is her role in the founding of The Huffington Post, a liberal news outlet that combines both news aggregate and blogging elements. Although AOL purchased the site in 2011, Huffington stayed on as editor-in-chief, managing the Post to a Pulitzer Prize win in 2012.
Almost as intriguing as Ms. Huffington’s professional career is her political history; she has identified as both conservative and liberal at varying points in her decades-long career as both journalist and entrepreneur. (Ed — any good Californian knows she also opposed Terminator for governor in the 2003 recall.) This unique view of both sides of the political spectrum, coupled with her groundbreaking work in digital media, make Arianna Huffington a fantastic and informative candidate for Fall Speaker, Sir Ian’s peerless cool notwithstanding.
“Fly, you fools!”
…to your laptops and vote here right now to have Sir Ian McKellen as this year’s fall lecturer! Yes, you heard right. You may be able to see Gandalf/Magneto in the flesh.
But why Sir Ian McKellen? Well, why breathe? Why eat? Why smile back at Gail at the Ratty? Sir Ian McKellen is everything that is good in the world. Not only does he boast an impressive acting career, but he’s also just unfathomably suave and cultured. It’s hard for me to articulate just how perfect this man is (you did notice the “Sir” part, right?), so I’ll just let his accomplishments speak for themselves.
The grandpa we all secretly want
Upon learning that the Lecture Board Speaker Poll was officially open, one of our writers sprung into action to proclaim that she planned to vote for Mindy Kaling. World War III erupted as both BlogDH staffers and readers alike disagreed with this preference. As such, several members of our team were inspired to action and decided to write pieces advocating for their first-choice speakers. Expect fleshed-out plugs for each candidate from now until the poll closes. It’s like All That‘s ‘Know Your Stars’… except not fake.
First of all, I have to say Lecture Board did a PHENOMENAL job with this year’s candidates. Sure, Mindy Kaling is pretty cool; Arianna Huffington created one of the most popular news sites of our age, which is okay; Guy Fieri is ignorant about his ‘90s boy-band frosted tips, which is completely amusing; and Sir Ian McKellen was knighted, which I guess is kind of a big deal. But guys… BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY.
Seriously, this guy.
