Sextion: The spring fever hookup guide

SWFIELDGUIDE

BlogDailyHerald is proud to introduce our newest Sextion writer, David Johnson!

The season of the Polar Vortex was all about cuddling, sipping hot cocoa, binge watching “House of Cards” with your significant other, and basically using their body heat to save on your gas bill. Now that it’s getting warmer, the birds and the bees are back, frisky squirrels are chasing each other around the Main Green, and breakups are a dime a dozen (I’m looking at you, Senior Scramblers). In the animal kingdom, we call this mating season. In college, we call it Spring Fever.

Luckily, Spring Weekend is just around the corner — the perfect opportunity for curing our Spring Fever. Now that walking to a party across campus doesn’t feel like March of the Penguins, the tanks are breaking out, and maybe even some shorts. Everyone’s attitude says sun’s-out-gun’s-out, so if you are interested in getting busy romantic, this weekend is all about letting loose and having fun. It’s a great time to break the ice with someone new — maybe even someone you’ve been secretly crushing on. When the options range from Chance to Binder to Fratty in the Ratty, how do you know where your perfect guy/girl will be raging? Use this field guide to find out.

The Hipster Heartbreaker

Found at: Chance the Rapper

The Hipster Heartbreaker is that DGAF kid that you have been crushing on forever. Probably more “Prepster” than a true RISD Hipster, you first saw them while stalking your class Facebook page the summer before arriving at Brown, and since then, they have proved to be even cooler than you imagined. The Hipster Heartbreaker is trendy and intelligent, probably concentrating in MCM or Comp Lit, and has a Georgia O’Keeffe coffee table book in the living room of their Barbour suite. Despite your better judgment, you can’t help crushing on them. They have gone through numerous partners over the years because no one can seem to keep up with them. But you’re sure that you can.

How to spot: The Hipster Heartbreaker is wearing an awesome Spring Weekend tank that you totally didn’t see when you were choosing which one to buy. They have that casually perfect “I woke up like dis” look, making you wonder, “did you wake up like that?? And why the heck can’t I?!” The Hipster Heartbreaker is either wearing a knit beanie or has hat hair (the sexy, pushed back kind) because they just took it off.

How to break the ice:

  • Stand next to them and say loudly: “I mean, my cousin went to high school with Chance the Rapper in Chicago so like… I’ve basically known about him since 2011.”

12 Days of Spring Weekend: Ms. Lauryn Hill

lauryn-hill

Now that we know our killer Spring Weekend lineup, it is time for BlogDH to give you a crash-course in all things Ms. Lauryn Hill.  While you may have not heard her name since your finer elementary school days, you can be sure that this Saturday night headliner will not disappoint. Prepare yourself for a confident and passionate performer who will elicit a sea of snaps from an inebriated empowered crowd. This creative artist has helped mold the world of hip-hop and we could not be more excited that she is coming to Spring Weekend. (Mis)Educate yourself on the rap, R&B, and hip-hop goddess that is Lauryn Hill:

Singer-songwriter, producer, actress, and all around badass, Lauryn Noelle Hill was born in South Orange, New Jersey in 1975. According to Hill’s MTV bio, she grew up listening to her parents’ “multi-genre, multi-generational record collection,” which fueled her passion for music. Even from a young age, Hill was apparently a natural performer and occupied the stage of Harlem’s noteworthy Apollo Theater at the age of 13. Some other famous artists who got their start at the Apollo theater include Billie Holiday,  James BrownThe Supremes, ,Marvin Gaye,  Stevie WonderAretha Franklin, and Mariah Carey. Hill also made an appearance in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and gave her some greater recognition for her musical talents.

In high school, Hill met Wyclef Jean’s cousin Prakazrel (Pras) Michel. Pras asked her to join his band called The Tranzlator Crew, which later became The Refugee Camp, which developed into the Fugees, playing on a derogatory name often given to Haitian-Americans. The Fugees got a record deal with Ruffhouse Records and recorded two albums. Their album The Score, released in February 1996, contained their hit-single, “Killing Me Softly” and went multi-platinum.To this day, The Score is one of the best selling hip-hop albums of all time.

Spring Weekend Tanks: A round-up for 2014

Last week, we gave you BCA’s line-up for Spring Weekend. This week, we bring you tanks on tanks on tanks. We understand how overwhelming it can be to prowl around on your Facebook newsfeed and various class pages in search of the Spring Weekend apparel that best expresses you, so we have consolidated that process and created a buyer’s guide.

Normally, we would publish this after spring break. However, with SW being only ten days after we resume school, most of the deadlines for ordering tanks will be at the end of this weekend! Get them while they are hot (and still available/without rush charges).

*IMPORTANT NOTE* – Be sure to check out the process for buying the tank that you want. In the case of Teespring campaigns, there will be a printing threshold. If not enough people buy a tank, it won’t be printed and everyone gets his/her money back. A couple of these tanks work through other online platforms, are only sold through spreadsheets, or are still using google docs to figure out whether they should order the apparel or not. Start being a responsible consumer early this year and stay updated on the status of your purchases. We have tried to link to as many FB events and teespring pages as possible, but, just like Pokémon, it’s hard to catch them all.

The artist-relevant: For everyone who wants to represent their favorite Spring Weekend artists, or, for everyone who has really bad short term memory and keeps on forgetting the line up, you can now wear them on your upper body. You have a choice between wearing an artist’s face, or the slightly more obscure/hip option of referencing their lyrics.

You’ve got your Lauryn Hill face, and arrow:

Chance, juice carton and plain text:

Diplo’s face, and a very intimidating Diplo-themed bear face:

We are still waiting on a tank featuring Andrew Bird.

The feminists: It’s really exciting this year to have a whole category of Spring Weekend tanks dedicated to feminism. You can go with the subtle fem-powered, the cheeky “D“, or the extremely catchy, Spice Girls-themed consent tank. Ask me what I want what I really really want. . .
