Cheer your hearts out: Sporting events 11/11 – 11/12

Men's soccer has won its last two Ivy matchups 1-0. Forward Austin Mandel '12 has scored the lone goal in each game.

In case you haven’t seen the big “Ever True” banner in the Ratty, or the life-size pictures of the soccer players posted on the door’s of that same dining hall, or you haven’t been following the Herald’s coverage, or you just generally live under a rock, we’d like you to know that the men’s soccer team is battling Dartmouth for the Ivy League title this weekend in its final home game of the season. It’s pretty rare that such a straightforward clash for the title takes place, so you should come out and cheer for your fellow classmates. If soccer just isn’t your sport, here are the other matches taking place on Brown soil this weekend:

Friday, Nov. 11

The men’s basketball season starts at 5pm against Johnson and Wales. We hope the Wildcats enjoy the wild five minute drive up the massive hill.

Women’s ice hockey faces off against RPI at 7pm. With a 1-2-2 record, the squad seems to have already improved over last season. We’re not going to say that’s not sad.  [Read more →]

VIDEO: M. Soccer Falls to PC in PKs

Here’s the penalty kick-filled finale of the Ocean State Soccer Classic!!  Brown and Providence College battled through 120 minutes of scoreless play on a lovely Labor Day afternoon. But our neighbors went on to grab the title, scoring five penalty shots to our four.  No worries, though — the game counts as a tie, so the Bears are still undefeated this year!

Catch the start of the Brown Soccer Classic (much cooler than the Ocean State one) this Friday at Stevenson Field.  Bears vs. South Carolina Gamecocks, 7 p.m.  View the full schedule here.

Men’s soccer headed to NCAA Tournament

After closing out the regular season with a 3-0 win over Dartmouth on Sunday, the men’s soccer team had to wait to find out if they had earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Bears were rewarded on Monday evening with a place in the 48-team field.

Brown (10-2-5, 5-2-0 Ivy) will host Stony Brook (6-9-4) on Thursday night at 7:00 at Stevenson Field.

Check Wednesday’s Herald for an article by Katie Wood recapping the Dartmouth game and previewing the NCAA opener.

Winners, Bad News Bears and a Lengthy Women’s Hockey Digression

Lots of winners this week. Why? I can think of three possible reasons: as an apology for taking several weeks off (I blame midterms), because I’m a nice guy, or, just maybe, because a lot of teams did well. I say it’s all three.

Winners and Bad News Bears, sort of

Remember the Seinfeld episode where Jerry always breaks even? Yeah, this was that week for Brown sports. See for yourself below if you don’t believe me. Hence, there are no Winners and no Bad News Bears this week. There is only a vague sliding scale of quality that exists only in my head. Deal with it.
