6 ways to beat “November Sadness”

The month of Halloween, otherwise known as October, is very much over. Though these spooky weeks brought spooky things (cold weather and midterms), the promise of end-of-month candy, parties, and costumes made it all worthwhile.  Now that October is gone, so is the illusion of prolonged and constant fun. Jack-O-Lanterns will be replaced with probably premature holiday decorations and the Monster Mash will be replaced with innumerable renditions of “Let It Go.” The sun will eventually start to set closer to the times that some of us wake up than to when we should be inside. What’s to keep a Brown student from just heeding Elsa’s advice and letting it all go? Blog offers you a couple of ideas!

1. Warm Drinks. October is still a bit too early to go hard on hot chocolate or apple cider. November? Bring on the hot stuff! If you are adventurous, December eggnog is just around the corner.

2.Thanksgiving break (!!!) October provided one restful and problematic long weekend. November will bring three extra turkey-filled days for you to enjoy with family, friends, Netflix, or for those of you who are ambitious, research to prepare you for finals [Ed. – noooooooooo]. Winter break is just long enough to help forget the pain of exams and allows for some well-deserved unwinding before the impending snow and homework take over second semester.

Blue Room creates Pumpkin Spice Challenge Part Deux

And this time, you were all invited to take part.

Remember when we did a little pumpkin spice challenge? Remember when we sacrificed our bodies and minds to the gods of flavored coffee syrup and fall-y flavors? We thought we were done after taste testing any and all things pumpkin on College Hill. But BDS and our little seasonally spirited friends over at the Blue Room couldn’t help but giving us one more challenge before the season of peppermint and gingerbread kicks in into high gear. We can pretend that after our last PSC (Pumpkin Spice Challenge), we said we’d never even look at anything pumpkin again. However, we will go ahead and admit that we’d never make a claim like that, and if we ever did, it would be a straight up lie.

4 pm yesterday was one of the most glorious moments of the semester. Not only were meal credits accepted at the Blue Room, but the pumpkin shop was open for business. Here’s a review of what we ate so that all who missed this once in a lifetime opportunity can live vicariously through BlogDH’s pumpkin beat reporters.

The BlogDH Pumpkin Spice Challenge: A breakdown of everything pumpkin on College Hill

Though fall has only blessed us with its presence for a mere day or two, College Hill is a few steps ahead. Scratch that: College Hill is many baked goods ahead.  Sacrificing our bodies, our minds, and our time, we’ve done the dirty n’ delicious work for you and embarked on the great Pumpkin Spice Challenge. We wanted to prepare you for a season that once consisted of hayrides and haunted houses and that now is incessantly linked to #basic Instagram posts of people fake laughing, wearing sweaters, and clutching steaming mugs. If you want pumpkin (we want pumpkin), you got it. Here’s a breakdown of everything pumpkin on College Hill, complete with information about what it is, where to get it, and how worth it the $4.38 and the 59 Instagram likes truly are.

How you feel?: When the waiter asked if I wanted granola, chocolate chips, or fruit in my pumpkin pancakes, I became immediately overwhelmed at the Instagram possibilities and responded “none” in haste, which I immediately regretted. Much to my surprise, however, the pancakes spoke for themselves. Melted butter was all they needed. The warm explosion of pumpkin flavor – which did not seem to be born out of real pumpkin – felt comforting and familiar. The smooth texture was exactly what a girl needed, and every bite got better and better. Numerous times, a swarm of bees tried to steal my pancakes, so I feel it’s appropriate to give them an 8.5 out of 10. They were literally the bee’s knees (lol).

How you feel?: Most of my friends didn’t even know the Blue Room had a pumpkin muffin. Well, here’s my response: if ya don’t know, now you know. And you should get one. Now.

I went to the Blue Room at 11:57 a.m. in the hopes of finding one of these elusive baked goods. The muffins present were neither warm nor pumpkin. I asked when the next batch would be ready, and they told me 15 minutes. I returned in 15 minutes, to find that I should return in an hour. Frazzled, I returned every 15 minutes another four times. When they were finally out of the oven, they told me they were “not allowed to give [me] a muffin until 1:20,” so I returned at 1:20, and FINALLY received my warm pumpkin muffin. Talk about persistence. Ta-da!

Let me tell you, it was about the best darn thing I’ve ever eaten. It was warm and fluffy, but not so moist that it was mushy. (That’s what she said, right? [Ed.–no.]) The portion size was perfect. I told myself I was only going to eat the top knowing I would eat the whole thing and still be totally fine and perfectly satisfied. In terms of its pumpkinness, it was perfect. It wasn’t trying to be a pumpkin cupcake. It had autumnal spice without being spicy, and a recognizable pumpkin savor without being too sweet. Thus, the Blue Room astounds with enough authenticity to make it easy, peasy: 10 out of 10.

Chow Down Brown: Pumpkin-infused everything

October is now upon us. You know what that means: it’s officially time to take advantage of the pumpkin-flavored beverages, food, and activities ubiquitous during the best month of the year. Make the pumpkin a staple in your daily routine this fall.

Start your morning off with a Starbucks pumpkin latte or a pumpkin spice chai at Tealuxe. On the topic of pumpkin beverages, Woodchuck makes pumpkin cider, and the Alehouse has pumpkin infused beers this month, for those over 21.

If you’re right on campus, try a pumpkin muffin at the Blue Room. Even if you’re off meal plan, they’re worth using real money for—they’re one of the reasons fall at Brown is awesome.

State of the State: Pumpkin record smashed

The description for the above video really says it all: “Pumpkin.”

Last Friday in Topsfield, MA, in a competition we know you all followed with bated breath, an Ocean State resident broke the world record in pumpkin growing. Now, to give you a sense of this magician’s gardening skills, the new gourd to end all gourds snatched the title from some doo-doo head named Chris Stevens (from Wisconsin or some other flyover state), who set the record in 2010 with a 1,810.5 pound pumpkin. Ron “Rhodey” Wallace (nickname pending approval) grew a pumpkin that tipped the scales at 2,009 pounds — over a ton! The Topsfield Fair awarded the Greene, RI, resident a cool $15,500 for his efforts, which, on top of the $5,500 he snagged for 1st place, included the $10,000 prize for breaking the one-ton mark. Protip for President Paxson: If Brown offered 10k signing bonuses, our admissions process would become vastly more competitive.

We know, though, that Wallace won something even more valuable: our hearts. Grow on, fair Rhode Islanders, grow on. Let’s make 2013 a TWO TON year, k?
