UPDATE: WPRI reported that police found a Nerf gun in Chafee Hall, and that “investigators believe there was never a gun or an active shooter.” Nevertheless, they are continuing to search the building.
Police and the University of Rhode Island are investigating reports of an alleged gunman on campus. According to the Associated Press, the gunman was spotted near Chafee Hall at URI. Classes have been cancelled in the South Kingston campus and URI students are urged to stay indoors. Keep them in your thoughts, and stay safe.
Furby is obviously a campus celeb, so it wasn’t surprising that he was invited to ride in style to last night’s Avicii concert at the University of Rhode Island. Although Furby is a big fan of Brown’s Spring Week, the little guy needed a change of scenery (read: Kingston, RI) in order to appreciate Spring Week all the more.
The Bears’ schedule was released today and, after the success of last fall’s triumph over Harvard under the lights, Bruno will host its second ever night game in 2011. While the opponent will sadly not be the pompous Crimson from the north–or any other Ivy League foe, for that matter–the stakes will still be high. The visitors will be the Rams of URI, and the winner gets to host some silverware–the Governor’s Cup–and prove who really is the best team in the smallest state in the union. Kickoff is set for 6:00 PM on October 1st, so clear your calendars now and prepare to get rowdy.
Last fall against Harvard, the evening setting provided one of the more memorable moments for both the team and fans–all 17,350 that nearly filled Brown Stadium to capacity. So get stoked, Brunonians. Fall semester may be months away, but it’s never too early to start putting on the facepaint.
Brown’s dance groups caused a splash with their Spring Weekend flash mob. But they may have already been outdone: a URI flash mob led to the early closure of a campus library Sunday night after 400 students descended in coordinated choreography. According to ProJo reports, students were playing loud music, chanting and standing on tables. That so would not fly in the Absolute Quiet Room.
Hometown hero(?) Pauly D made a surprise trip to URI this Wednesday night to visit an old girlfriend (one of the rarest roses?). A mob of eager students formed around his white Mercedes (detailed with his name on the back) and waited for the reality tv show star to emerge. As you can see from the video, the mob of about 400 students descended on the vehicle, presumably hoping to cop a feel of the gelled up fist pumper. Although he may have decided not to visit Brown on his trip back home, his teachings of GTL are with us always.
In case you missed it: Last semester, BlogDH sent an investigative team into the place where Pauly D gets his hair cut.
Alcohol + Caffeine, Not in Michigan's House // CBS News
Elections have passed, so now we can actually focus on issues of substance. Enter the Four Loko debate. The colorful 23.5 oz can has made several notable appearances on the blog recently, as a handful of American colleges (including URI) have banned the alcohol-caffeine-sugar beverage from their campuses. Nervous college students have been anxiously anticipating what institution would ban Four Loko next. Last Thursday, however, somebody threw a curveball. Michigan (yes, the entire state) decided to put an end to anything and everything Loko. The state’s liquor control commission placed an immediate ban on Four Loko and other alcohol-infused energy drinks, such as Joose and Torque. If the orders of banning magnitude continue to multiply at this rate, it’s only a matter of time before the FDA finally gets involved and reaches an ultimate verdict. For now, all you Loko heads better stock up because forecast says Loko’s shaping up to join Sprite Remix in beverage heaven.
Well, you might have the chance to meet Michael Emerson, the actor who plays Ben Linus on the ABC television series LOST.
Emerson is speaking at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, RI on Sunday, October 24th at 8:00 PM. The talk is being promoted as “Behind the scenes of LOST and Mr. Emerson’s Life and Career.” Some sources say he also may apologize for killing Jacob. No promises.
Ticket can be bought online at ticketmasteror on the campus of URI if you find yourself in Kingston during this next week.
The women’s soccer team (6-4-3, 0-2-1 Ivy) won 3-0 against University of Rhode Island (1-11-1) this afternoon.
After an uneventful first half, the Bears scored two goals within the first five minutes of the second half. The first came off the foot of midfielder Maddie Wiener ’14 (Wiener was the Ivy League rookie of the week last week–with good reason) when she booted it from the sideline and managed to get it past the surprised and unsuspecting URI goalie. Wiener also assisted in the second goal along with midfielder Gloria Chun ’12; the two managed to get the ball to midfielder co-captain Gina Walker ’11 to score after the URI goalie fumbled the ball.
The third goal came off a free kick from forward/midfielder Mika Siegelman ’14. Although technically unassisted, she managed to get some help from the URI defenders–the ball deflected off of them and into the net.
Co-captains Gina Walker '11 and Charlotte Rizzi '11 meet with the refs and captains of URI before the game for the coin toss.
The team plays again at home this Saturday, 2 pm, against Harvard. Be sure to cheer on the Bears at this rivalry game!
