The current season of South Park has been a dark, strange affair, and one of the weirdest moments of the series occurred a few weeks ago, in an episode titled “Cash for Gold.” At one point, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone take us through a painfully long cutscene that shows the vicious cycle of overpriced TV jewelry from sweatshop to salesman to purchaser to Cash for Gold buyers and all the way back again. What takes that sequence out of the realm of weird and into the realm of South Park-weird is Parker and Stone’s bouncy, a capella soundtrack. Viewers of the show soon realized that the song can spice up any sort of travel montage…even one featuring a tractor. Trust us. This is oddly mesmerizing.
