Well friends, the long weekend has come and gone, but never fear! After three grueling days of class, you’re in for a blissful Saturday and Sunday. Why? Because it’s Oscar season, of course! And Rhode Island is ready! So grab a friend and get beyond the bubble this weekend. We’ll show you how.
1. Anne Boleyn by Howard Brenton
Where: The Gamm Theatre, Pawtucket
When: Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m.
If you thought you understood Tudor England from your ravenous read of The Other Boleyn Girl, think again. This play promises to be a witty, revolutionary take on the dramatic story of Henry VIII’s second wife. In this version, Anne is a bold, strong woman who helps change the course of history. She is played by Brown/Trinity Rep’s very own Madeleine Lambert. If you’re aching for some historical, dramatic culture dressed in regal court costumes, then this is the weekend event for you!
2. The Oscar Experience: Providence
Where: The Vets, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence
When: Sunday at 6 p.m.
It’s that time of year again, glitz and glamor here we come! To watch the Oscars in style, get a ticket to the Oscar Experience, hosted by the Rhode Island International Film Festival! All proceeds benefit a number of charity organizations, such as the Youth Film Jury, Rhode Island Film Forum, Cine ¡OLÉ!, and the Providence GLBT Film Festival. The website boasts that this black-tie event will consist of “a Red Carpet entrance and reception with Paparazzi, Producer Circle Awards, hors d’oeuvres, drinks, live music, silent auction, a sit-down dinner, gourmet desserts, raffle of VIP Passes to RIIFF 2013, and of course screening of the Academy Awards.” A number of Providence’s local celebrities and film buffs will attend, including Anne Conway, Museum of Work and Culture/RI Historical Society; Michael Janusonis, Arts Writer, Providence Journal; and Michael Ryan, Rhode Island Film Collaborative. For those of you film buffs or anyone who wants to feel like a movie star, this is the weekend for you!
