Last Call: Abby Plummer

Then + Now

Then + Now

As the semester progresses at the speed of light, the senior class is beginning to make peace with that fateful day in May: Commencement. Until the class of 2015 leaves us, BlogDH wants to highlight all the interesting things they’ve been up to. To this end, we’re (re)starting the series Last Call, which features seniors reflecting on their experiences at Brown. Each featured senior will tag another senior for the next installment. Find this year’s other “Last Call” chain here and our RISD “Last Call” chain hereWe’re restarting one of our chains with this post.

People might know me as… Mara? Emily? For some reason people often really confidently mistake me for other people. I think it’s my hair color.

In my time at brown, I am most proud of… The class that my incredible, inspiring GISP-mates and I crafted this year, Race and Gender in the Scientific Community. I learned so much from them, and am bursting with pride at what we accomplished last semester. Check us out!

On Friday night, you might find yourself… Snuggling.

3 things you wish you knew freshman year:

  1. It’s okay to stay up really late once in a while. A good conversation is worth way more than a good night’s sleep.
  2. That being said, the amount you sleep is definitely correlated to your mood. So make sure to sleep, especially two nights before an exam. Also, you’re going to develop some weird superstitions about sleep. Try to make friends who will not make fun of you too much for them. You will inevitably fail at this task.
  3. Don’t tell so many people you have mono. A shocking number of them will still remember and bring it up senior year.

Ratty vs. V-Dub: Ratty. No competition. My friends actually called me Ratty for a while freshman year. Because of my love of the Ratty, I hope.

Best random thing you did at Brown… I got all my friends to dress up as squirrels and play bananagrams the week after Halloween sophomore year. I don’t remember what the reasoning was there.

One thing you wish you had done at Brown… Taken a professor to the GCB.

After graduation, you plan to… Go to school until i’m old and crusty. I want to get another degree to keep my Sc.B. company. Which I’ve decided to refer to exclusively as my Bachelorette of Science… I’m hoping it will catch on.

what’s the hardest class you’ve taken at Brown? Would you do it again? Statistical mechanics with Thomas powers. Yes, yes, yes — it changed my life in all the best ways. Shout out to Alex Meehan who took it with me after I successfully bribed him with vanilla frosting.

Most rewarding extracurricular… OLEEP. I’m so proud of OLEEP this year— such an wonderful community has formed, both among mentors and mentees. We have amazing underclassmen that I know will continue to make it better and better, and full of more and more foxes, in the coming years.

One piece of advice for underclassmen… Every semester is almost unrecognizably different than the one before it. figure out how to hold on to the good bits and know that a lot of the bad bits will go away by themselves next semester. And make friends in your classes— problem set buddies will have your back through thick and thin, and they will make even the toughest classes doable.

Describe your thesis, lolmythesis style… The sun’s magnetic field is mysterious, and modeling Earth’s climate is really hard.

Next up? Uday Agrawal

Abby’s question for Uday: If you had $100 to spend at the Brown Bookstore, what would you spend it on?
