Last Call: Alexx Temeña

As the semester progresses at the speed of light, the senior class is beginning to make peace with that fateful day in May: Commencement. Until the class of 2015 leaves us, BlogDH wants to highlight all the interesting things they’ve been up to. To this end, we’re (re)starting the series Last Call, which features seniors reflecting on their experiences at Brown. Each featured senior will tag another senior for the next installment. Find this year’s other “Last Call” chain here and our RISD “Last Call” chain here

People might know you as… The hella extra Mandé TA foon* who studies how to live a fulfilled life and asks big questions, often turnt without turnt juice and dansing in public or private, physical or metaphysical or spiritual or digital or liminal spaces with or without music. // Alternatively, the girl with the long hair and impeccable swag
*As defined by the F∞ncabulary – The Essential Guide to Phoonery, foons are obnoxious, overbearing tricksters, but their behavior is always driven by authenticity and love for their friends. Foons are rarely basic, but often mistaken as such. Also see: fooning, foonworks, foonwear.

In your time at Brown, you are most proud of… My community of loving, kind, and generous friends and foons who support and validate me every day. All of my friends are beautiful and talented and remind me to self-care, to play, and to do me and not apologize.

On a Friday night, you might find yourself… Fall 2011: Devising new movement/contact improv-ing to the Lion King soundtrack in the Cave (Lyman Hall) with my best friends, and then exchanging massages using all-natural vanilla-scented IcyHot. Spring 2015 – Hosting a Filipino Heritage dinner, a cooking class, a potluck, etc. for the squad/birthday circle/faves, and then pillow-talking with housemates.

Three things you wish you knew freshman year…
1. Yr brown education is for you.
2. Choose self-care; it is indeed possible to have a regular gym routine and be in bed by 11 p.m.
3. Brace yourself – the snow in Providence is about to get turnt (don’t let it break you).

Ratty vs. V-Dub? Nah. My house, my kitchen, my cooking.

People might know you as… That chick with an undercut, a curly top knot, and a circle scarf tryna do contact improv with people in very public places.

In your time at Brown, you are most proud of… helping a program called Food Recovery Network get up and running at Brown and at other college campuses across the country. Basically, students take excess food from their dining halls to nearby community partners. #nofoodwaste

On a Friday night, you might find yourself… Cooking a muy rico dinner with my roomies at ~SpEcIaL fAnCy HaUs~, chugging wine, and doing tarot card readings. If I’m feeling energetic, Twerk Fridays at Ego.

The best class/professor at Brown is… anything with Ralph Rodriguez. I’ve never had a professor so committed to their students who also busts our brains open (in the best way) on the reg.

Three things you wish you knew freshman year…

  1. Sign up for less stuff. Srsly chill.
  2. Take classes you are truly interested in rather than for skills that you think you need.
  3. Be an Ethnic Studies concentrator.

People might know me as… that lady over there talking about the “core issues” in inappropriate settings.

In my time at Brown, I am most proud of… everything I cultivated in my life outside of Brown.

On a Friday night, you might find me… convincing my roommates to watch a creepy cult film, and then immediately falling asleep once we finally start the movie.

The best class/professor at Brown is… The Intimate State (Politics of the Family) with Prof Self. I took it with an amazing bunch of people and the course content helped shape my interest in using historical frameworks in activist spaces.

Three things you wish you knew freshman year:

  1. You don’t have to coordinate to eat dinner with 15 people every single night.
  2. Make friends with Professors ASAP because advising stops v. abruptly after the first year.
  3. Only take classes that are exciting to attend. If a class is boring, but the material looks good, just take the syllabus and nerd out over the readings during the summer.

RISD Last Call: Noah Berch

By now, you’ve read the beginnings of this semester’s Last Call chains here and here. This year, BlogDailyHerald is adding another chain to the mix (or more than 2 chainz, if you will), featuring seniors from the RISD Class of 2015. Presenting RISD Last Call: making art school a little less confidential, one senior at a time.

People might know me as… The boy who loves and knows way too much about the Kennedy/Onassis family… (and is an owner of 11+ books on the subject…)

In my time at RISD, I am most proud of… The life-long friendships and experiences I have gained. I will miss being surrounded by such driven, ambitious, and talented peers.

On a Friday night, you might find yourself… In the studio or with friends. A bottle of red wine usually makes its way in there.

The best class/professor at RISD is… Image Bank taught by Lisa Young. She’s incredible.

Three things you wish you knew freshman year… The weather sucks for most of the academic year, being challenged is a good thing, and it’s okay to relax.

The Met vs. Portfolio… The Met.

One thing you wish you had done… Taken more classes at Brown.

Who or what are the major influences in your workI am constantly inspired by nostalgia and history. I also look at street style for ideas. I love seeing the way people carry themselves with how they dress. Old photographs also influence my color palettes. I enjoy mixing modern styling with nostalgic, timeless pieces.

People might know me as… “Vic,” but I’m still hoping “Victorious B.I.G.” will catch on.

In my time at Brown, I am most proud of… Earning the approval of Kate Schapira.  (I once came to class wearing a beige coat, beige sweater, and beige trousers.  She said to me: “Wow. That’s a lot of beige.”)

On a Friday night, you might find yourself… Tweeting dirty jokes to Kate Middleton.

The best class/professor at Brown is… Kate Schapira is my Wanda; Jim Egan is my Cosmo.

Three things you wish you knew freshman year:

1) La Arepa, 574 Smithfield Ave, Pawtucket, RI 02904

2) Pho Horns, 50 Ann Mary St # 403, Pawtucket, RI 02904

3) Spike’s Junkyard Dogs, 485 Branch Ave, Providence, RI 02904

Ratty vs. V-Dub? Whichever one Daniel Choo is at.

People might know me as… the girl who always wears black .

In my time at Brown, I am most proud of… Being asked to guest lecture in Stephen Kinzer’s class on Iran about my thesis research and the Tehran art scene.

On a Friday night, you might find yourself… Watching Gilmore Girls (no shame) until I am called into action by someone who wants to go out, or convince someone that going out is a good idea.

The best class/professor at Brown is… War, Revolution and Art with Shiva Balaghi. It was just perfectly up my alley and we had lots of “personalities” in that class.

Three things you wish you knew freshman year…
1) There is actually a LOT of amazing food in RI.
2) To buy actual snow boots instead of destroying all my shoes (too late now).
3) Even with an open curriculum, it is really easy to fall into taking the same types of classes all the time (even within a concentration). I sometimes feel that I limited myself; not that the classes I took didn’t interest me, but more so that I didn’t  venture out of my comfort zone enough.
